C.S.
I had the IUD about a month ago, and am happy. The only thing I see was I had some cramping and spotting for the first month.
My Dr. has suggested that I consider using the Mirena 5 year IUD or the 10 year ParaGard copper IUD. I have read so many negative things about both of these, from side effects and other horrible problems caused by the IUD. I am looking for any information good and bad to help me decide.
Thanks
Thanks for all the replies. I ended up staying on the NuvaRing. I decided that I didn't want to risk anything with the IUD. It seems a little dangerous to me, to have an object semi permanently placed in my uterus like that. Maybe things will change in a few years from now. But for now this is what will work for us.

Hey D.,
After our second child was born a year and 11 days after our first I was freaked out about getting pregnant for a third time in 3 years, I went on the pill and in 2 weeks it dried up my milk supply...Very upset with that.
I got the 10 year copper IUD because you still get your period with it. It was a tad uncomfortable, but in comparrison to child birth it wasn't painful. I will say that I have mixed emotions about it.
My first few periods were VERY heavy, and I had unbelievable cramps. I have also gone through random periods coming and going for 2 week intervals for 4 months at a time also a big pain in the rear. Who wants there period twice in a month?? NOONE.
It is a foreign object in your body so there is an adjustment to getting used to it. I have seen my OB 3 times feeling something wasn't right because of the random periods lasting 2 weeks, he has always assured me it was where it was supposed to be.
I don't love it, but I do like the peace of mind knowing I'm not going to get pregnant and with raising 2 babies that are on the go and running a household a being a working Mom I don't have to remember to take a pill.
I will say before getting married I tried the depo-prevara shot and I didn't get my period. I gained weight, I was moody, my skin broke out, I was not a happier girl and my sex drive disappeared. I opted for the 10 year IUD because I feared the 5 year would have a similar effect on me as the depo-shot due to No Periods.
I feel it is unnatural not to have your period or to take a hormone that keeps you from having it. I felt like I was going through Menopause on the depo-shot.
As I said before I don't love it, but I don't hate it either. I have many friends who have it and so far none of them have had major complications. I'm looking into a more permanent fix. My husband and Dr. both agree I'm too young, but I feel I'm completely done with having more babies. I love the 2 I have and can't imagine having more.
P.S. SO I don't sound horrible I had cervical cancer 3 years before I got pregnant against the Doctors predictions of ever carrying a baby to full term and again a year later. I just don't feel like I need to rock the boat so to speak.
I guess you can't post twice to one forum however, I was reading a magazine I got from the library it's the Women's Lifestyle Magazine... they have a website and on page 15 of the magazine there is an article about Hot Trend in Birth Control and it talks a bout IUD'S. here's the link http://www.womenslifestylemagazine.net/images/jan08.pdf
I have the Mirena and have had it alittle over a year and have no complaints. I read up on it and didn't hear many horrible things, otherwise, I would not have considered it. My best friend and another good friend also have it and we all seem to love it.
The only thing I can say is that I do not have consistent periods like I used to, however, they aren't as heavy as they used to be either and I rarely have cramps.
I think you're doing a good thing by asking others on the board who may have it and others who may have had it in the past, gives you a good idea to form an opinion.
Hey there! I talked about an IUD with my doctor, but since I really don't want more children I went with the Essure. i absolutely love it!!!!! Its simple outpatience procedure, no incition and no down time. The best part is the do a dye injection 3 months later to ensure your tubes closed. I totally trust my doctor but seeing for myself on the screen that nothing could pass through was very reassuring. If you don't want more children and you don't want to go back in 5 or 10 years for a new IUD I strongly suggest the Essure. check out the website.
My ob/gyn advised against the IUD (especially the copper) for me because of the the high risk of cancer. I think that it is better that you research other birth control methods which are safer for you.
After having my 2nd child, we decided to try the Mirena IUD while we decided if we were ready for permanent control. At first, it was okay. No periods, no PMS. After about 3 years, I began noticing that I was so tired that I couldn't make it through my day. I would get up with the kids at 630am and by 1030 or 11am, I was ready for a nap. This, in turn, made me feel as if I was beginning to slip in some sort of depression, and my sex drive was completely depleted. I spoke with my DR about it and he said it wasn't a normal side effect. My husband and I knew it was so out of character for me to act this way, so we decided to have it taken out. The simple removal procedure turned into a hospital stay that included a DNC for removal and a week recovery! Apparently, tissue had grown around it making it tough to remove. The funny thing is that I have enough energy to chase my kids, I'm happy, I've lost 6 lbs that I didn't even realize I'd gained, and my sex drive has returned!! Please don't choose this form of birth control.
D. I have had the Mirena IUD for 7 years now and after having been on about 5 other birth controls that is the best one I have been on. I did the 5 year one at first to try it just in case I wasn't happy, but after it was up in 06 I got another 5 year one. I have no side affects at all, at first the only problem was that I was spotting for like a month and it was hard especially for my husband if you know what I mean. I love it and I trusted my OBGYN's advice and she was right it has worked for me.
I have an IUD. IT is the non hormaonal copper IUD good for 5 years. I have had it year it works good the only down side is that it took my period about two months to regulate. But than that I have had zero problems with it. I love it and it has zero side affects for me.
I have had the Mirena for a little over 7 months and I have no complaints. In the beginning your period is a little irregular, but now I don't even get a period which my doctor said is normal if my period disappears altogether. It has also helped my with my PMS, I don't have mood swings as I used to. I other IUD for 10 years my doctor recommended against it since it gives you extremely bad cramps and very heavy periods. I hope I was of help.
I.
I have the Mirena IUD and I love it! This is actually my second one. After my first daughter was born I got one and after about 5 or 6 months I didn't have periods at all which was great. Then we decided to have another baby so I had it removed and within 6 weeks I was pregnant. Then after our second daughter was born I got another one, that was almost a year ago. I still have periods this time but they are light and usually only last about 3 days or so. I was told by my doctor and from the information that I researched that it only completly takes the period away about 20 percent of the time. The hormone level in the IUD is very small.
Again I love it but some people have not had the same results. I also felt very little pain both when it was put in and when it was removed!
Good Luck!
