Mirena IUC

So I am going to put some really personal stuff on this so I hope I don't offend anyone. I had the Mirena IUD put in in May and have been doing fine with it. But today i started feeling like it was poking me inside - first thought it was coming out. I felt up inside and could feel the strings and they seemed really sharp. After reading online it seems the strings are poking me. My question is that do I need to go to my OB/GYN like tomorrow and tell her about it or is it just how my uterus is right now and see if it gets better. I just had surgery last week (not female stuff) and am recovering from that now and the last thing I want to do is go have her poking on me - but if I really need to I will. You guys are always so brilliant so I thought I would ask you first! thanks!

What can I do next?

I have had mine for 3 years and have never experienced what your are explaining. I would contact my Dr. and review over the phone first to see if you need to visit.

I had an iud put in about 2 years ago and after a few months i started to feel something different with my strings and I went to the doctor and it was coming out! I would go to the doctor and check it out because you don't want the iud moving around inside of you. If you are feeling something that you haven't felt before than something has changed.

I would definitely go to the Dr. I would be as frank with him as you were here. Tell him you just had surgery, but the IUD is poking you and it's very uncomfortable. He might take it out or possibly replace it. Good luck and God Bless!

Good Morning D.! I would call your doctor and explain the situation and see what she suggests. I had the same IUD inserted in November of last year and have had a wonderful experience. The strings softened fairly quickly... I don't beleive they were as sharp as you are noticing after 3 1/2 months. I would say it's better to be safe than sorry. Hope that helps!

I have had the Mirena IUD twice. After the first one, I had noticed what felt like little wires poking me. I went in to the Dr. and they checked that it was still in the correct place and cut the strings shorter. So, after my second son, when I had the IUD inserted I had them cut them shorter and had no problems. It only took 5 minutes for me to get checked and fixed.

My gyno told me "you just need to learn to feel around up there and coax them into curving towards the walls" My problem was, I could not feel it, but boy howdy, hubby sure could! So, make an appointment and have your doc check it out, but more than likely you will be taught how to "coax those little pokey things into place". Hope this helps, Speedy Recovery!

You need to go to the doctor right away - if this thing is sharp it could puncture or make you tear - it's not a good situation friend. Those places especially are nothing to 'wait and see'...
Wish you well

Hi...I had the "old school" copper T IUD put in nearly seven years ago...it took three tries (3 separate iud's in one office visit...ouch) and in less than a year I was pregnant. Here's what my Dr. said...the IUD seemed to not be "in all the way" and did i know if my husband could feel it during intercourse (sorry for the graphics ladies)...it turns out that he could, and she guessed that possibly, this could have been the reason I got pregnant w/an IUD.
I would think that you could call your dr. or nurse and chat w/them on the phone...they may just make you an appt. remove it and replace w/another...no idea what the procedure is. I do think you have to get it looked at...perhaps not immediately (as in today).

I think you should go ahead and go to your OBGYN. When I had mine in, I noticed it felt funny, not like a poking, but more of a moving around feeling and when I went back for my check-up, I told them about it and was given a sonogram. I was told it was out of place and had to be removed and given a new one. You might want to abstain from intimate relations until you get it checked out, if yours has moved you could get pregnant. Good luck, I chose not to get it replaced and I am currently typing with one hand while feeding my six week old and fighting my 2 and 3 year olds for the computer mouse.

D.:
I had the Mirena IUD for a little while and I too had the same problem. Infact, I swear it was moving during "intimate" times with my husband. It was very uncomfortable. My dr. said my body rejected it. I ended up having it taken out because it started to really hurt. I suggest you speak to your dr.

I have Mirena too. I would definitely go in and have the Doctor adjust it for you. I know it's a hassle, especially while you are recovering. However, I wouldn't want to add this discomfort to the list too. Also, I don't know where or why it is poking you, but you don't want it to preforate (spelling?) your uterus. I have heard that this can happen....
Good Luck!
P.S. Yes, those strings do feel more like little wires right?

I have had the Mirena IUC since July. I don't feel like I am being poked and the strings should be up far enough where they don't interfere with you daily or natural functions of life. The strings should just be fabric. Call your OB/GYNE. It is better to be safe than sorry some time later.

I had the Mirena also, I also had a string problem, mine were too long when she first put it in, but if you are just now feeling the strings then maybe yours has come loose. I would call your doc first thing in the morning. It shouldn't be too bad, it should just be a quick check to see if it has dislodged and cut the strings. The only reason i would call sooner rather than later is if it has come loose then it obviously would not work to stop pregnancy and if you are uncomfortable it should be fixed before it causes another problem cutting into your skin. the "strings" are actually small metal wires so it can be serious. Good Luck!

The strings should be able to be cut down some, I think you should see our Dr to make sure it is in the correct place. I have 2 friends with recent IUD's put in and BOTH have had to have surgery already from them for complications..One was Mirena and the other the Copper T. Better to get checked and be on the safe side and wait and it be something that could easily be fixed in office : )

Most likely the strings just need to be trimmed, but if you are concerned about something else they can do a sonogram and make sure it's in the right place.
