Mirena--Breastfeeding

I know that with Mirena ICU the spotting can be irregular (and annoying) for up to 6 months. But I'm curious if anyone has nursed after having Mirena inserted. I am currently nursing and can't help but wonder if the spotting is prolonged because of that. Any advice or comments would be highly appreciated.

What can I do next?

Thanks everyone those were all very helpful responses. I'm going to check with my OB/GYN.

Hi N.,

This is my second time with Mirena. I had this one inserted at my 6 week postpartum check-up and my son is still breast-feeding at 8 months. It seemed as though my postpartum bleeding was prolonged a bit with the Mirena but I haven't had any spotting or periods since the postpartum bleeding stopped. With my first son I didn't get my period back until he was 7-8 months or so, roughly 2 months after I stopped breast-feeding. Also, the first time I had the Mirena (got it when my second son was about 2 1/2 and had it for a little over a year and a half or so) I had the spotting/bleeding for a few weeks after insertion then nothing until I had it removed.
Good luck with it all,
A.

I had the Mirena IUD put in at my 6 week post partum and breastfed my son until he stopped at 7 months (he would completely refuse but thats another topic!) I still have the Mirena in and I love it. I have only had a couple instances of spotting around the time I would have had a regular period. I never spotted while I was nursing. Now, my son is 18 months and I havent had any spotting/periods in so long I dont remember when the last time was. I would recommend you contact your OB if you are concerned about this. They will be happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have!

I don't know much about the mirena, but you could probably get ahold of La Leche organization and ask their advice. Or you could call the local hospital and ask to speak with the lactation consultant - they may have some good information for you. You may also just want to speak with your OB/GYN.

I had the mirena insterted right after I had my daughter (she's two and a half now) and had random spotting for about 6-7 months or so, then it pretty much stopped. After I stopped breastfeeding, I expected that my periods would return to normal, but they didn't come back at all, which my OB says is the case about 20% of the time. Its great! I've heard of other saying that they spot but don't actually have a regular period, but you probably won't know what YOUR norm will be until after you stop breastfeeding.

I also have the Mirena. I love it. I got it at my 6 week post pardum check up. I brestfed my daughter until she was 6 months old. I only had spotting for about a week. Then 2 months in I had a noticeable period. Since then I have had 1 other 'period'. For me the spotting and brestfeeding never seemed to go hand in hand.

Hi N.:)
I had the Mirena inserted at my first checkup after the birth of our daughter. Unfortunately I couldn't breastfeed but I pumped and can tell you that I bled from the time in was put in (Dec.) all the way to the beginning of March:( It sucked! But now things look like they are back to normal...every 28 days I have a period for about 4 days (very light) but this is only been happening regularly twice. I have read that breast feeding makes you not have a period so maybe the bleeding is the healing from putting it in? Good luck!
