Mirena ? - Phoenix,AZ

I am just wondering if any one out there has the mirena (IUD)? I had mine placed last year (September 2006) after my second son was born. When it was placed I was told to expect spotting, cramping off and on the first 3 months and then possible break through bleeding for months to follow. I nursed my little guy until December and thought I was beginning to have regular periods in Feb. I have read that some women have little or no bleeding during the typical 'period time' with mirena. I am wondering what the experiences of those who have had it have been in the first year?
Also.... I feel like I get SUPER BAD PMS around the time that I think is my cycle. Anyone else have this problem? I also notice myself being so tired all the time....I honestly took a pregnancy test about 6 weeks ago! I got a neg as expected.... :) Anyway...anyone out there in the same boat as me? The occasional cramping is gone for the most part...but I'M SUPER SNAPPY very bad BAD PMS! I'm not use to it and i'm trying to blame it on something!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for everyone for the advice! I have an appointment in a few weeks for my regular pap smear and will have everything checked to be sur eit is position correctly! From various msg boards and here I am finding that my symptoms are fairly common! The last week I have been fine?!?! So I'm assuming it is related to my cycle even though I am not having periods. (I took another preg test last week to be sure!!) Thanks for your help..

Hi J.-
I also have the Mirena IUD and have the same problem with incredibly bad PMS. My OB insists that it could not be the problem but it is a VERY noticable difference in me. I also used to have 3-4 day periods, now they are 5-7 days!!! UGH!!! My husband who before was clueless when I was going to get my period can just TELL when it is coming. I am short, anger easily and snap at everyone. This is really not me at all. I would wind up crying because I felt like I was SOOOO mean. My doctor insists that it is not because of the IUD, but recommended Evening Primrose and Vitamin B Complex. I will say it has helped some. It can't hurt to give it a shot. At least am not as edgy as I was. Hope this helps and GOOD LUCK!! I know it is not easy!!

I also used Mirena. I had it removed in March as an experiment because I think it was what was causing me to be unable to lose weight. However, I never had a problem with periods, cramping or PMS. The cramping might be due to ovulation. Your body may still be adjusting to the hormones released into it by the IUD. Mirena releases Progestin (not progesterone) into your UTERUS, not your blood, to prevent you from getting pregnant. If it is inserted correctly (which most likely it was), you should not have the "horror stories" told below happened to you. IUD's have changed a great deal since the stone ages!

My mother had an older version of an iud.. haven't you heard any of the horror stories?!?! you can still get pregnant... in fact, from what I read with an IUD it can implant into your growing fetus! It can also allow you to get pregnant and than force a miscarriage!!! Miscarriages are NOT PLEASANT!!! I just read a question on here about a woman going through a divorce and is pregnant right now and has an IUD in and has to get it removed!!! GET IT OUT!!! There are more effective methods of birth control that won't injure you or a possible "oops". Ultimately the choice is yours. I just can't believe they still make those things.

I have had Mirena for over a year now. I havent had a period since last June. But I have had some spotting here and there a few months ago. But not a regular period. I had it checked out by my doctor and they say that everything is normal. They said since I put it in soon after I had my last baby I could get my periods back, but I havent spotted since and it's been a few months now. I do get cramps and PMS still I don't really keep track to see if it's the same time every month or anything. It's pretty mild, not like before Mirena. I am happy with the Mirena. I'm not good with birth control so this has been great not having to worry about it, especially not getting periods. Hope this helped! Have a good one! :)
