I only know of 2 people that had children when they were 40 or older and they both had difficukt pregnancies and their children have down syndrome and they are not even related to each other. I have heard through doctors that the older you are when you ahve your children the higher risk it is for them to have down syndrome or soem other serious health problems, but i hope that is not the case for you. I don't know about the mirena iud, but i am on the shot and i have been ofr about 4 years now and i have been very successful in not getting pregnant so far. I didn't lose my hair or get fat like everyone says it will do to you.

My sister and I both have the mirena and love them. Some people will experience a little discomfort the day they put it in, but I was fine that day. I've had mine for almost 2 years now and never had a problem with it, my sister has had hers just over 4 with no problems as well.

I had been on both the pill and the patch at different times before and much prefer the mirena.

I have the Mirena IUD. I've had it for a little over a year now, with no complications. There wasn't any pain when they put it in. I did have some minor cramping as it "settled in" the uterine wall. It's been wonderful! I have no periods, save for a little spotting every few months. No cramps. I only have to use pantyliners for my "periods" now (if you can even call it that).

I have an ex-coworker who had her first child at 40, with no complications. She did seem to be a little worn out by the little one, and I don't think she's planning on having another (I haven't seen her/spoke to her in a while).

As far as the elevated platelets go. My mom has this (she's 49, after 2 kids: 27 & 30), and she sees a "blood doctor". She doesn't tell me much, except that they're elevated. I wonder if she holds info back, but who knows. She goes every so often to get bloodwork done to make sure things are still in check. Don't worry! While I was pregnant, I had an elevated white blood cell count, and went to see my mom's blood doctor. They never did find out what was wrong, it cured itself after my delivery.

My grandmother had my aunt at 42 and she was a single mom . . . she handled it great and my aunt and her are bestfriends. I also have a good friend that I go to church with whose husband was career Air Force and they had two kids early on but no he is retired and they decided to have more. She had her 3rd child at 41 and 4th child at 43 . . . she has lots of energy, is more patient with these two she says, and uses life experience as a benefit in her parenting. She loves it . . . don't get me wrong there are some days where she feels crazy but that is true for all of us and some days where she looks ahead and thinks "I will be sixty when they go off to college," but overall she is handling it great. I think it depends on your physical and emotional health personally with any life changing decision like childbirth no matter what the age. GOOD LUCK with your future decisions!
