Milk Supply Low After Mastitisis

My little one is still little (3 weeks) but I have always been able to pump 2-3oz out of each side. I have a great ability to make a lot of milk and successfully pump it all out. I had a bad case of mastitisis last week and I'm on 2 types of antibiotics. I have increased my amount of pumping (every 2 hrs if I can) but I'm still sore so I don't want to push it.

I just really want to keep up w/ her and haven't breastfeed since she was days old bc of personal delivery complications.

Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

I had mastitis when my first was 5 weeks old. It was miserable. It hurt to nurse her so badly, but it was the best thing to do. I had to nurse through the pain. I think all you can do is pump through the pain, it will get better. good luck and congrats on your little one.

If you are only pumping, please rent a hospital grade pump. Otherwise your supply will decrease, you may get plugged ducts/another infection, and will dry up over time- happened to me when I exclusively pumped with a medals pump in style with baby #1- dried up at 4mos! Take care! I am currently nursing a 4 week old and nursed my last a year.

Drink copious amounts of water! You probably got the mastitis because your milk ducts are clogged and you're dehydrated.

It happens because when the baby is not latching milk won't come. Try healthy nursing tea by secrets of tea and nurse your baby as often as you can. You'll get better results.

Fenugreek is a supplement you can get at GNC or other vitamin stores. It works GREAT! They recommend you take 2-3 capsules three times a day. I started with that many and once I got a good supply going I decreased to two once a day and found I was able to keep up with my DD. Good luck!

Are you working on getting her back to nursing directly? Mastitis and low supply can both be caused by not emptying the breast completely, and that's pretty common with pumping. Nursing directly will stimulate your supply and decrease the odds of the mastitis coming back.

Happy nursing!

Oh no I remember this so well, happened to me too, first we both got thrush, then I had blocked ducts, then the infection, I tried & tried to pump & breastfeed but the infected breast was giving next to nothing & the other not much more. Sadly I gave up in the end, everyone said they would be painful & sore etc but I had no trouble, clearly they had already dried up. I know breast feeding is the best thing for you and your child but if you are both uncomfortable and miserable you have to weight up the pros & cons;) best of luck to u and your little one;)
