My milk supply is starting to go away and my son is only 4 months and it was not like this with my other son. I have had to pump with both kids. Any suggestions from Moms to get my supply up?

What can I do next?

I always had good luck with Mother's Milk tea. Drink 3 cups a day and plenty of water. See if that helps at all.

My pediatrician had me take Fenugreek. It is an herbal supplement in pill form so it is simple to take. It really helped and I have taken it a couple times on my own since then. Good luck!

First, how do you know that your supply is low? Is baby not gaining weight? Often women think their supply has decreased and it really hasn't. The best thing to keep a good supply is nurse on demand, this is the only way your body will know how much milk the baby needs. Don't supplement if possible, every time you give a bottle that is one less feeding your body thinks the baby needs. Drink tons of water, eat well and take your prenatal vitamins. Staying in bed with the baby for a couple of days doing nothing but nursing well and taking good care of yourself and baby goes a long way for increasing supply too.
It really is seldom necessary to pump to maintain an adequate supply. If there are other concerns that are affecting your supply (i.e. the pill, working, previous breast surgery) you might go to a local La Leche League meeting to see if they can offer help.

Also try Mother's milk tea by traditional medicinals.

Hi K.,

I highly recommend taking Fennugreek. You can get it in the vitamin section of most grocery stores (definitely Whole Foods) and it comes in capsule form. Take a ton of it... 3 at a time several times throughout the day, until you can smell it coming out of your pours (smells kind of like maple syrup). You should notice a difference w/in the first day or 2.

You can also try pumping in between feedings a few times/day. This will tell your body that it needs to be producing more.

Hope this helps,

A.

Fenugreek is an herb that helps boost your milk supply. The only thing is it make your urine smell like maple syrup.
You can buy Fenugreek at any health food store.
Also, maybe try pumping more often to stimulate your milk supply. Good luck.

Drink lots of water for starters. Also there is a supplement called Fenugreek that worked wonders with my son. He nursed a year. My oldest only 4 months.
Also you may have clogged ducts and just don't feel it, that happened to me to. I have a massage therapist that also does natrual healing, he massaged my ducts and that made the milk flow freely. I won't lye it hurts while he is massaging the ducts out but it worked. He does it very professionly to. He is not expensive either and I have been going to him for 10 years. If you live in the salt lake valley he is by st. marks. Send me an email and i'll give you is number.

Pump whenever you can! I would pump for 5 min or so after my son had finished eating. Even if nothing comes out, the stimulation will help to increase your supply. Good luck!

I see taht several people have already reccomended fenugreek, it is really good, you can also take blessed thissle, take them together. But you have to take enough of them to do any good, I took 2 capsules of each with every meal for the first few days and then reduced it to one capsule of each at every meal. If you only take one or two a day you will not see any results. The mother's milk tea is the same, you have to drink cups and cups of it or it won't work, the pills are a little easier to dael with.

For serious supply issues, ask your doctor to prescribe Domperidone (Motiliumâ„¢) it is a drug that has, as a side effect, the increased production of the hormone prolactin. Prolactin is the hormone that stimulates the cells in the mother's breast to produce milk. The good thing about it is that it does not lead to a side effect of depression, as some of the other prescriptions for increasing milk supply can.

Good luck and don't give up!

Try taking fenugreek. It's an herb that you should be able to pick-up at any health food store. There is a tea, but don't get that; it isn't potent enough to do any good. Get the capsules. You will need to take a lot - about 3 capsules 3 times a day. It really does work. I took it with my last and it about doubled my milk supply.

Also, make sure you are drinking a lot of water and plenty of milk. If you are at all dehydrated your milk supply will decrease. It is also easier for your body to make milk if your drinking milk.

Hi K.!

I would encourage you to eat as many raw foods as possible- raw fruits and vegetables being especially important (but don't forget the healthy fats- avocado, raw nuts, flax oil, etc) Instead of plain water, drink some herbal tea- Nettles, Red Clover, Raspberry, Lemon Balm are all very good herbs. You can certainly try a Mothers Milk tea, but the tea will only minimally affect your milk supply. Tinctures are the most effective at increasing your milk- these herbal remedies are concentrated and milk is increased in 24-48 hours, in most cases. I recommend the remedies from Motherlove as well as Wishgarden Herbs.

It is also about this time, postpartum, that the body really gets in tune with baby's need and doesn't produce quite a surplus, but rather closer to actual supply and demand. But, by all means, if you feel like you are not producing enough, then try these suggestions and your milk will naturally increase.

If you would like to learn more about the herbal remedies, here is a link for more information about them. (http://www.naturalchoices4baby.com/catalog.php?category=2) And I would be happy to extend a discount to you, if you'd like to try them. If so, or if you have any questions regarding which remedy is best for you, please let me know!

Merry Christmas!

People have recommended fenugreek and blessed thistle. This are good herbs, but know that the dried capsule form of the herb is less potent than a liquid or liquid capsule form, such as More Milk Plus.

Don't be at all afraid to get help from a lactation consultant. A little time and money now may go a long way to making your life and supply easier.

Here are some other tips:

I tried fenugreek or Mother's Milk Plus, both herbal supplements. They worked ok for a while. Then my doctor put me on Reglan, which helped while I was on it. You might also check with the lactation consultant at the hospital where you delivered. Hope this helps!

Hi K.,
I had the same difficulty around 4 months and 7 months with my son. I was able to continue to nurse exclusively until he was 12 months. The thing I did when my supply started to seem low was to boil water & dill (the spice) & fennel seed (spice) and then strain it out and drink the liquid like a tea. I drank a coffee cup worth twice a day for about 3-4 days. I know it sounds weird, but it was the most natural way I found to increase my supply quickly. I was able to see results in about 12-24 hours.

It helped especially during the times that I had to travel and pump. I also increased my water intake as much as I could.

I hope this helps! Good luck with it!

Do you mean that you only pump? (Or do your babies nurse at all?) Since it's hard to give a good answer without more details, I'd recommend calling a La Leche Leader. Look them up on llli.org.

My usual advice for increasing milk supply is nurse/pump more often. It's how often your breasts are being stimulated that increases your supply.

You can drink a tea called Mother's Milk. It tastes like licorice. Also if you call your OB/GYN they might give you a prescription that you take that will increase your milk supply.

Breastea is working GREAT for me. You can get it at Breastea.com. I am now pumping over 5 ounces at a time. Before I could only pump 1/2 ounce.
