Milk Coming Out of Nose?

Hi there. Last week I started giving my son an extra ounce of formula when he feeds (he has become much hungrier throughout the days, so I increased his food). However, a few times since, shortly after he eats, he coughs or spits up and out comes some milk through his nose. He cries like he's in pain right after. Is this normal? Is this because it's too much food and he's throwing up, but out the wrong hole? He's never spit up through his nose before...

He already has acid reflux and soy/milk allergy, both of which have been under control for a long time. This only started occurring when I increased his food quantity. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Is he sitting up or laying down? Make sure he sits up to eat/drink, and be relaxed while you monitor him. Best wishes, S.

Your nasal passages and through mouth are connected - that why when we were in Jr. High, the guys thought they were funny when they'd squirt milk out of their noses.

It may be due to the increased volume of formula - especially since with reflux, the lower esophogeal sphincter doesn't close all the way letting stomach contents back up into the esophogus.

If it's worrisome, call the pediatrician and see what they recommend. Usually, a triage nurse can help put your fears to rest (I'm guessing it's not uncommon for babies with reflux).

Good luck.

My daughter also spits up through her nose. She has done it since she was born. She has acid reflux, but we were told that it doesn't have anything to do with it. Her dr. said she was fine, just that it is all connected. (ears, nose, throat) He did say it burns pretty badly. She cries pretty hard after it happens.
I have noticed if she has had too much to eat that she tends to do it worse. I'm not sure if that is the cause, but there could be a connection there. I would try going back to the amount you gave him before and see if it stops. I would also mention it to your dr next time you are there. As awful as it seems, there isn't a lot you can do for them. Sorry!

Too much food in the stomach at one time so it has to come back up and it is causing more reflux. It's very common for it to come through the nose. Go back to the amount that was comfortable and feed more often.

My son did that when he was a couple months. Freaked me out, but they told me it was normal...and mine was breastfed. Sit him up after each feeding so he can digest properly before laying him down.
