M., my son was diagnosed with egg, soy, and peanut right around this time too, and I dont know aoubt you but i was shocked, and feeling like 'ok what the heck will he be able to eat now?!" (neither my husband or I have any allergies) i looked around a lot and found of good info at foodallergy.org. you can subscribe to their newsletter and it has in the latest research and bills that the organization may be trying to pass and like 6 or more recipes that are allergy free!!! I have used many recipes and they are really good. Also I went to Squeakers in BG and bought a box of egg replacer, kind of expensive, but well worth it.if i can help in any other way, or maybe want to swap recipes let me know, C.

I have a friend who is a vegan - and the cake thing is simple... you just need to buy a box of "egg replacer" - they'll usually have it in the specialty section of the store & you can make a normal box cake with it instead of using eggs & you would never be able to tell the difference. I've used it for many cakes & my husband who is anti everything weird can never tell.

I hope this website is still up and running, because it is a great one...try it..vegweb.com. They have vegan recipies, so that means no milk or eggs in their recipies. They have a huge database and also they allow their members to rate the recipies and add comments, so you can see which ones are well liked, and get tips on how to improve on the original recipie. I have many food allergies, so I have used vegweb for quite a few things, and I have always been very pleased. They even have things like fake cheesecake recipies, cookies, etc. I even have a choc. chip cookie recipie I posted on there myself. I have found that soysilk (plain) is a good substitute for cereal milk. Some of the fake yogurts, cream cheeses and so forth, you will more than likely have to get at a specialty shop such as Mustard Seed in Montrose. Watch out for fake cheeses though..many still contain milk proteins...and the ones that dont, well, they taste horrible, at least imo. But the fake ice creams, yogurts, cream cheeses are pretty good and the fake sour cream doesnt taste good by itself, but it works well in recipies that call for sour cream. Be careful when eating out or letting your child buy lunch at school..milk and eggs are in everything. Be a label reader. Most fast food places have an online site where you can find out if milk or eggs are in their products. There is also a place here in ohio, and you can either drive there, or order online and have shipped, chocolate that they make that has no milk or eggs and its pretty good. The name is Chocolate Emporium :)

I have a friend who's daughter is alergic to eggs. For her birthday cakes she makes rice crispy treat cakes, rice cripsy treats molded into shapes. The older kids love them becuse they are so differant than everyone elses. Not sure how appropriate that is for a 1 year old though. You can also do some alternative, like a nemo or rainbow fish theam and make little fish bowls with jellow and gummy fish, she would be able to eat those. Make sure you get all your facts about egg subs. some still contain the ingrediant that she is alergit to, some do not.

Hi M.,

My daughter was diagnosed with milk, egg and peanut allergy at 8 months old. It feels overwhelming at first but you will find things for her to eat. As for the cake, Cherrybrook Kitchen makes a cake mix, icing, cookies, etc. that are milk, egg and peanut free. You should be able to find it at Giant Eagle or Heinens. Their website is www.cherrybrookkitchen.com if you want to check it out. I won't guarantee it tastes like Betty Crockers cake mix but you will know it is safe for her. Also, I went to Wild Oats Market 27249 Chagrin Blvd. Woodmere, OH 44122 Phone: ###-###-####. I told them what allergies my daughter had and the one gentlemen took me around the store and helped me shop for age appropriate foods for her. ASK for help, it is out there. I don't remember all the products we purchased at the time because my daughter is now 2 1/2 yrs old and has grown out of both her egg and milk allergy. Now we just have to watch out for the peanuts. One item we did buy at Wild Oats was Barbara's mashed potates. They were just potatoes flakes and you could add margarine and soy milk (if those are ok for your daughter). Cherrybrook Kitchen also makes a pancake mix that we used all the time. I hope all the feedback you received helps out. Good luck!!

You could make a "coke" cake ... a chocolate cake mix with one 12 oz can of coke mixed in, nothing more ... you bake it as normal. It tastes different, but it's really good. I've heard others using Sprite with yellow/white mixes or orange soda for orange cream cake, etc.

Good luck! That is a tough allergy to deal with.

i have a friend who has a daughter in the same prediciment, although the older she gets the more she is allergic to things. But any way she found someone that was willing to make a dairy free cake. I will have to ask her where she got the cake. My son seems to have the milk allergy so I do have to becareful but he was okay with the cake. Here is a thought instead of a cake make her a pie, the crust you would have to make sure did not have any dairy in it. I know that we like the first birthday to have a cake but when we had my sons b-day we let him play with the cake to get pictures then we have him some strawberries and pie filling. I took the crust off. But to him it did not make any difference it was food. He loves food. There is also a could of webistes that I can't think of right now that offer great recipies.

Hi M.,

Have you ever been to Claudia's Natural Food Market on Monroe? This store is amazing. They always have delicious dairy and gluten free baked goods. I have seen eggless food in the deli too. I am sure you could order a cake to your specifications. I really recommend Claudia's.

Have a great birthday!

I've used Ener-G egg replacer and soy milk in baking before and it turns out great. I actually prefer the egg replacer (which is made of potatoes) to eggs in baking because it gives a fluffier texture.

I've never been vegan, but I'm vegetarian and my ex is lactose intollerant so I got a vegan cookbook... How it All Vegan by Sarah Kramer and Tanya Barnard ... which I love mostly because of the recepies for baked goods.

You also may want to check out Patty Cake Bakery, our local vegan bakery. I've never had their cakes, but their cookies are wonderful!

M.,
My 11 month old daughter has a dairy and wheat allergy. My concern was for her first birthday party too. I've given up on the traditional cake idea and decided to go with a chocolate cookie. This cookie is found at Whole Foods by the bakery in the glueten free freezer. It was the only baked good in the store that is dairy and gluten free. Before running to Whole Foods, you could give them a call. I found them to be helpful and friendly on the phone.
Good luck.
