I had just spoken to my ped about milk allergy the other day and he said that some babies grow out of it, so hopefully... (I am breastfeeding and try to avoid dairy, so I don't know about formula, sorry and good luck!)
hello everybody. my 2.5 m was just diagnosed with a milk protein allergy and put on Nutramegen. does anybody know if thats the best formula for milk allergic babies?
Thank you!!!!!!!!
Well, my baby's milk rotein allergy is too sensitive for Nutramigen or Allimentum- they still have milk protein- just broken down. Becarefull those who have very sensitive allergies!!! I also have milk protein allergy- and mine is very sensitive- and "broken down/partially digested/hydralized" milk protein-casein is basically the same thing as milk protein that has been cooked- so, it's like giving a baby with milk allergy a butter cookie.... those with sensitive allergies WOULD STILL REACT TO THAT COOKED MILK PROTEIN AND HAVE ALLERGIC REACTION...MAYBE MORE MILD... BUT STILL SERIOUS ESPECIALLY IF YOU DO IT REPEATEDLY. Please be carefull!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My baby reacted to Nutramigen and Alementum... and now was swtiched to Soy and is doing better thankfully. But it was very scary- her intake of formula went down to 1.5oz perfeeding, and she's almost 3m! But thank you all so much for your caring responces! Hope our experience (which could have been totally avoided!) will be of help to somebody.

For my daughter it was. She couldn't handle regular formula, or soy, but this worked like a charm!
You could try soy formula, but many babies who have a true milk allergy also have sensitivities to soy. Otherwise, the nutramigen or alimentum will be your best bets. I know in the past some insurances would help cover the costs of the more expensive formulas with preapproval/doctor prescription, etc. I'm not sure if any still do, but it might be worth checking out.
Also, I'm not sure what symptoms your baby showed or how your doctor diagnosed the milk allergy, but for what it's worth my middle daughter was diagnosed with milk sensitivities, but it turned out to all be reflux related. I'm not saying that's your case, but just wanted you to be aware that sometimes it's something else, so keep that in mind (especially if a formula change doesn't seem to help much).
Best of luck!
I know it worked wonders for my daughter. Her first month or so of life was filled with discomfort, gas & vomiting (not just typical baby spit-up, but serious whole-bottle throw up). She wouldn't/couldn't sleep on her back because of the pain she was in, so she slept on my chest. After a few days on Nutramigen, she was a completely different baby. No spit-up (not even a little), no pain, able to sleep on back, etc. While I know it is pricey, at that point, I would have done anything to help my baby. It made a huge difference for us & all you can do is try & see if it will help your baby. BTW... by the time she was a year old, she was able to drink milk & hasn't had any issues since. Good luck!

Be careful with it. My little girl was on it as a baby and it gave her explosive diarrhea aprroximately 12 per day with blood in her stool that took a while to clear up. This happened within a couple of days of using it. Needless to say we weren't on it long. I hope you have better luck with it that we did.

there are formulas out there that are soy based. I know my sister in law used enfamil prosobee. when you baby gets older it may also be a good idea to give your child soy milk instead of regular milk.
YES........it's THE best. My youngest son needed to be on the same formula because he had digestion problems. Because it was so expensive, I tried to take him off of it around 6 months old and did I ever pay for it!! He was miserable!!!! So, we kept him on it because it was worth EVERY penny we paid for the formula. He slept better and he wasn't cranky or uncomfortable. Good luck!!
Lactose free formula has milk protein. so yes, that is the best formula.
Lactose is a milk SUGAR, not protein. If you give her lactose free formula, it is minus the milk sugars, not the protein.
Nutramigen and Alimentum (the Similac version) are hypoallergenic formulas with the milk proteins really broken down to make it easier to digest. And yes, the are the most expensive, but your best bet.
Hey M.,
My daughter got diagnosed with the same thing at 5 weeks. She will be a year on Thursday and she is still on it. She did just fine. It truly worked. The first bottle I fed her I noticed a huge difference. I am excited to get her off of it due to the cost and the nasty smell.
Good Luck!

Hi M.,
Had you thought about looking into probiotics for infants to help with allergies.
Just thought I'd ask. Good luck. D.
Hello M.,
My son is currenlty 14 was put on that many years ago. I also work for a health insurance company and know that this is a good product. It may be covered under your insurance depending on his actual diagnosis. My son is not allergy to Milk now but is lactos Intolerance. I think this would be good for your son. The others were taken off the market from what I remember.
First, congratulations on your new baby! I can only imagine your concern learning about an allergy in your newborn. A friend of mine has a child with multiple severe allergies, including milk. He responded well to Similac Allimentum, but I believe that it most likely the Simliac version of the Enfamil that you are using. It is hypoallergenic. Now that he is 3 he drinks soy milk and does just fine.
Hi M.,
My daughter (now 16 mo) was diagnosed with a milk-soy intolerance so we were asked to supplement with a special hydrolyzed formula called Neocate. We had originally opted to change my diet and continue with breastmilk which unfortunately did not resolve the issue completely. If you are breastfeeding you could try to eliminate all milk products/by-products from your diet and see if the symptoms resolve. If your child has been on formula from the beginning work closely with your medical provider to identify the right formula. A soy based formula could also work, but as in my daughter's case, some babies with milk-intolerance also have a soy intolerance so you need to be careful. Also please note that as your baby gets older and you start solids many baby products have milk products in them so you will need to be very careful in choosing items for her to eat. Good luck!
I feel your concern. "God made children with allergies extra special," (that is what my 8 year old says.
She was on Mutramigan, however as she got older her allergy got worse. (Don't get excited) My youngest one was breastfed (not a pinch of dairy for 2 years for me) They are happy and healthy and you can substiture the dairy. If you have any questions let me know. As they eat food there are alot of labels to watch for, especially with cross contamination.
