My 13 month old daughter doesn't like to drink milk. As a matter of fact she doesn't like anything that contains dairy. I don't know what to give her so that she can get her calcium. She usually doesn't like anything sweet like yougurt or OJ. I need some new ideas because I am afraid that she isn't getting all the vitamins she should. I told my pediatrician and she won't send her any vitamin supplements. Please help!

Mine doesn't either, as soon as she was off the bottle forget about it. So I sneak it in her diet, mac and cheese, find a cheese she likes, ice cream, cheese cake, etc... I know you said she doesn't like anything with milk, but try new things (cream cheese, marscaponi cheese) Hannah now loves mozarella cheese. Oh and breaded cheese sticks in small pieces is great too. If not, look into other obvious or not so obvious products that have calcium. Good luck! Jen

I know this is a strange answer... but humans are the only animals that drink milk beyond being weaned, and the only animal to drink milk produced by another animal... I'm not vegetarian or vegan or anything, but I just don't think milk is necessary (as long as the rest of the diet includes other healthy foods). My son never drank milk until he reached kindergarten and discovered chocolate milk, and my daughter only has milk in an occasional bowl of cereal. We are not a milk drinking family and never have been

My only recommendation for the milk issue might be the "Toddler Formula" that Enfamily markets. (If your child does drink milk, it isn't necessary -- but yours doesn't so it may be an option.) I think it's for babies/toddlers 9-24 months.

As far as a vitamin supplement is concerned... I discussed that with my ped. at the last visit (18 months). He recommended Tri-vi-sol. It's over the counter. There is a prescription form that is similar, but it has fluoride. Since our water has it, he recommended Tri-vi-sol. Ask at CVS/Walgreen's (or whatever drug store) for it.

Good luck.

PS MY Mom used the same on us... over 30 years ago! Must be a decent product if it's still around and highly recommended.

Hi! That is too bad. My family has some food allergies and dairy is a big one. Hopefully it isn't an allergy she has and is just a phase she is going through. Here is a list of non-dairy foods that contain calcium, however you could also try a soy or rice milk that is enriched:

Collard Greens
Spinach
Turnip Greens
Okra
White Beans
Baked Beans
Broccoli
Peas
Brussel Sprouts
Sesame Seeds
Bok Choy
Almonds
Salmon
Tofu
Rhubarb
Sardines

Good luck!

My son when thru the same stage. I gave him orange juice calcium fortified, dilute with a little water (because of the sugar)from tropicana. The orange juice also helped with his immune system. He really liked and a few months later I tried milk again. Now he is 2 and likes both. I hope this helps.

Good Morning C.,

My pediatrian suggested Pediasure in place of formula/milk products. My 10 month old son refuses all formula regardless of whether or not it is milk based or soy ~ it doesn't matter what brand. He will only take breast milk at certain times of the day and I was looking for a suggestion to start weaning him. But I lost, he refuses the pediasure too. Or try silk ~ soy milk doesn't taste too bad.

Good Luck,

Hi my son is now just two but when i introduced cows milk to him at eleven months he did not like it as was use to breast milk. SO i tried a little chocolate syrup mixed in and it worked. Each week i weakened the amount of syrup i used till finally he did not need it anymore, now it is just a treat...................this worked for me. Maybe try flavouring the milk, you can get strawberry if she does not like chocolate!!!

Hi there...

My son is now 16 months old and he also refused milk at first. He gave up the bottle at 12 months (and formula along with it). Did she drink formula up until now?? If so you can try the stage 2 formula for older babies, if not you just have to keep trying. They say it could take up to 22 times of trying something new until they accept it. My son still does not drink anywhere close to the recommended 16-24 ounces a day... he does however drink calcium fortified OJ and apple juice. These days they make a ton of stuff calcium fortified-- bread, cookies, etc..
Perhaps keep trying the yogurt, cheese, and I also experimented with the sugar free choc.and strawberry syrups for milk, as well as I make sugar free pudding for him with whole milk.
If your pediatrician doesn't seem worried, then she should be ok?!?! Good luck!

I use Enfamil's infant vitamin drops for my son. It's really nasty, but I put a dropper full in his morning juice and he doesn't know the difference. You can mix it in with anything your daughter will eat.

Remember to keep offering her things every few weeks, even if she's rejected it in the past. Their tastes change so quickly!

Good luck.

Hey C.,

My name is L. and I'm a registered pharmacist. I also specialize in nutrition and nutritional counseling. The truth of the matter is, cow's milk is for calves, and not for people. Additionally, the cow's milk you purchase at the grocery has added hormones which are terrible for humans, and children especially. There are other sources of calcium than milk that are much better and much more bioavailable for your daughter.

I have two children who are strong and healthy ages 9 and 10, who have never been regular consumers of dairy products.

If you'd like me to help you with your daughter's diet, let me know.....

thanks,

Milk is not a necessary food. In fact, a lot of people question whether we should be drinking cow's milk at all. You can try fortified rice milk. There are many, many other foods that contain calcium. My son doesn't like dairy either and he's perfectly fine. Your daughter is telling you that her body does not want milk. Perhaps she's allergic.

My daughter didn't like milk for a while either, she does now, but my Dr. suggeste a liquid vitamin called Poly Visol (not sure of spelling) that you can get from any grocer or drug store. Regular kid viatamins are too strong for her at this point, but the liquid drops are designed for children under the age of 2. They don't taste great, but if you can mix it with something, I used to mix it with Juice. Hope that helps.

My son wouldn't drink any milk either. I think its probably b/c I nursed him until he was 15mos and when I started to give him milk it just tasted so different.
Anyway, I was concerned and told his ped. and she said it wasn't the biggest deal. Just try to sneak it in. (cheese, frozen yogurt, smoothies, mac-cheese, anything helps)
Well, when I went in to have my daughter (my son was 19 mos old) my mother in law gave him chocolate milk and he loved it. I didn't like him drinking choc. milk all the time - BUT I wanted him to get his calcium etc.. So I started mixing in just 1 or 2 tsp of the chocolate malt OVALTINE in w/ his milk (I feel better b/c at least it has lots of vitamins and minerals, I still only let him have 1 or 2 glasses a day)

All in all, if you like and trust your pediatrician and she is not worried or doesn't think that extra suppliments are nesasary. don't worry. As long as you feel your daughter healthy and on target for all her milestomes.

Now, my daughter just turned a year and she doesn't like milk either. But at least SHE will eat cheese =) Good luck!

There are LOTS of foods that still contain the much needed calcium your daughter may be missing. The pediatrician doesn't really seem concerned, which is a little odd. If you have her enrolled in WIC the nutrition specialist will be able to advise some foods. But since the baby is just 13 months old, she may not be used to the taste of milk; remember she is just finishing formula.....My first daughter really looked discusted the first times we offered her whole milk. Do not be discuraged though, as long as your baby is still healthy; I would give it a few more weeks to let her get used to it.

Based on her age, I take it you have just started her on regular milk (vs formula or BM). Give it some time and keep offering it to her, regular milk tastes different than BM or formula so they have to get used to it.--it took my son a few months to really get used to and start drinking milk, which is probably why your ped is not ready to give you supplements yet (and I agree).
If she was breastfed up until now (or you warmed her formula), you may want to try slightly warming the milk to room temp--(and then gradually getting it colder until she is used to it that temp so you don't spend her entire toddler years warming her milk!). I know when we switched my son from BM to formula--I had to do this because (at first) he wouldn't drink anything cold...it took about 2 weeks to get him to take it right out of the fridge...
Another thing you could do if she still will drink formula or BM is to cut her milk with it so it tastes more like what she is used to--and then gradually adding more and more milk while dropping the formula or BM...if temp is also an issue you could do this gradual more milk and making it colder at the same time--does that make sense?
Don"t give up--just keep offering it to her at meal times...

OJ is also a bit strong and acidic for kids her age--something milder like watered down white grape juice, apple or pear juice would be more appropriate (I water my son's down about 2 parts water 1 part juice)--watered down will cut way back on the sugar and add the fluoride that comes from tap water...
but honestly if she is drinking water--there is not need to force juice upon her--it really isn't necessary unless you are having BM issues and too much of it can cause a refusal to drink milk or water--the two most important beverages in her diet.

Keep at it--she'll come around!!

you have to keep trying it every day and dont give up, try heating it up in the microwave for 15 seconds to take th echill off, or add some sugar free chocolate or strawberry yrup to flavor it. She NEEDS the milk and the vitamins it provides for her brain growth so you have to keep trying she WILL take the hinit and learn that mommy is not giving up on this so I better just drink it. It may take every day for 2 weeks of trying several times per day but she will get the idea that this is her drink, and she will take it! Try not to give any juices or formula during the day because she may be filling up on other drinks and foods and that could be why she wont drink it too. the yogurt smoothie drinks work too but they dontr have all the benefits as whole milk provisdes for their young growing brains!--C.

my toddler didn't drink any significant amount of milk until he was 18 months old.

go to whole foods/wild oats (even publix) and look at the enriched rice milk & enriched almond milk - even enriched soy milk- look at the % daily amount of calcium in them and decide which to try/use...these have a lot of sugar, but it's hard because you need the calcium...also these don't have a lot of 'good' fat like milk does, so I would add flax seed oil to it or try & add 'good' oils to her diet like flax seed oil, found in the refrigerated section at whole foods/wild oats, avocado oil (you cabn fry/cook with this one), olive oil...

also you say your daughter doesn't like dairy products? how about ricotta cheese? cheese ravioilis? check brands to find the brand w/ the most % of calcium

anyway, broccoli has calcium, as does spinach

in the refrigerated healthy/organic section of publix there are broccoli nuggets and spinach nuggets- try these

also try using babyfood creamed spinach and spread it on bread or tortillas to make quesadillas- if she won't eat melted cheese then check out soy cheese and rice cheese- I'm not sure about how much calcium is in these products- you have to look at the % daily value...

Organic blacksrap molasses has an amazing amount of calcium (who knew?) and iron & potassium, too. use this to drizzle on baked sweet potato fries, baked squash, put it in pancake batter (rather than 'on' the pancake because it's so sticky), make french toast with it- get creative, lol...
