Mild, Left-side-only Hypertonia That Comes and Goes?

Has anyone else experienced this with their child. My daughter, Imogen, and her twin sister, Isabel, were born 8/5/09. Around 6 months Imogen was diagnosed with mild hypertonia, but it only seems to affect the left side AND her tightness comes and goes...sometimes the left hand is clenched, sometimes it's loose--same with her left foot. She was a little late to crawl, but rolled over on time, talks, etc....she might be a bit delayed overall for a 12.5 month old (she slouches a bit when sitting due to weak core muscles), but overall is very vibrant and the PT and OT really seem to bring her along (she crawled normally--rather than an army crawl--after a few days of us doing her stretching exercises). Her PT and OT are baffled by the fact that it comes and goes (presents off and on). Any ideas about what it is (we just had an MRI and get results in a week)? Any ideas where I could find more info? Or what it might be called (besides on and off, left-side hypertonia)? Evidently blood-clots are a possibility, and even though no one's mentioned CP, I do worry about that. It's just a strange thing. (NOTE: they were born on time at 38 weeks, but her sac did break 30 hours before we had to do the C-section...but her heartrate and temp were still in the normal range, though in the last hour they started trending slowly upwards).
Anyone else ever hear of this?
Thanks,
Catherine C

So What Happened?

Thanks for the answers. Her Asymmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex was delayed to be integrated; hopefully the MRI will give us some answers, but the primary reflex stuff is interesting. The fact that it comes and goes is what's so baffling. We're on a super delayed, very conservative vaccination schedule...way slower than normal (we love our pediatrician--progressive pediatrics--and changed insurances to a more expensive one just to go to them).

Does she see a Developmental Pediatrician? I am not positive, mine have seen one for later developmental issues, but it seems to me that she needs to have a doctor that will oversee all the interventions and check into something that the therapists do not see on a regular basis. Maybe a pediatric neurologist?

Hypertonia is a frequent issue for kids with a myriad of developmental issues, but it sounds like she is doing very well and you are well poised to access all the early intervention she may need.

I would be asking each of the questions you raised to a doctor who can help, those are my hunches, but ask your pediatrician for a referal!

Mine are hypotonic- and have the weak core strenth, is there some combination of the two?

Contact the International Chiropractic Pediatric Assn- sorry, but the MDs are missing something- and if she needs to have a vertebra moved a Chiropractor is the only on who can do that. The only ones who are trained to do that. And this Assn was founded by Dr. Larry Webster- the brilliant Doctor who found out why babies are breech, AND how to fix that so they turn. He was a gentle caring, and brilliant doc who reserached to be able to fix previously "un-fix able things"- and this Assn cares on his work.

Children who are born C-section are at high risk of retaining their primitive reflexes. If it is one sided something is not integrated. Many OT's and PT's do not address Primitive (primary) reflexes. Twins have many more issue because there is little room to move in utero. Movement is what integrates reflexes. Check out www.masgutovamethod.com and sign up on the children with challenges yahoo list serve and find someone in your area who can work on your daughter. You will se huge changes that you have never seen adn make sure her brain is prepared for higher order schoolwork later on. The other twin may also be affected even though you cannot see things now.I know there are people up your way that way that practice Masgutova. A great book to learn about this is Reflexes, Learning and Behavior by Sally Goddard Blythe. You can order it off Amazon. Let me know if you have any questions about the most amazing method in the world.

Hypertonia cam be generated by vaccine reactions... was that considered? Detoxification and nourishing the nervous system could help with it.
