Migraine Headaches - De Pere,WI

I was diagnosed with complicated migraines about 15years ago. They're not frequent (a few times a year) but when they do strike, they are completely debilitating and last one to two days. I lose my vision, my words come out in a jumble and the pain and nausia make me want to lay on the cool bathroom tile, in the dark, for hours. I've been to two different neurologists and both have prescribed a daily medication (a beta blocker which left me very dizzy and an antidepressant-for migraines??) but I don't feel as though these headaches are frequent enough to take medication every day-espically not these types of medications! I just need to know if anyone has any ideas on what works for migraines. I've gotten prescriptions for vicodin, and other pain killers, but they just put me into this restless sort of sleep and I'm left exhausted and with this pressure in my head for another day. I've tried Imitrex as well, both the pills and injections, with no relief. I just need something I can take at the onset that would curb some of the vision/speech loss and some of the pain. Any ideas?

What can I do next?

MIDRIN!!! I swear to you it's the best med for migraines. I only get them a few times a year and I get NO side effects what so ever from midrin. It's nothing like vicodin or addictive pain meds.

I get migraines like these too. Imitrex does not work for me either. Maxalt, like one poster already said, works wonders for me as well. Hope this helps!

I feel for you. I get migraines infrequently but when I do they put me out for the day. I also have a friend that gets them much worse than me. The problem is that everyone's migraines are different some are due to veiso-dilation and some veiso-constriction (the veins in the brain either receiving too much blood or not enough) that is why caffeine sometimes works because it dilates the veins to increase blood flow but if you have a migraine due to veiso-dilation it will make it worse. Follow the suggestions of others... see a chiropractor, check into acupuncture and keep a journal of what you eat to see if there are any triggers in that way. good luck!

I am so sorry. I suffered so much with migraines! The beta blockers and Imitrex didn't help me. A friend told me about Shaklee and I started using their supplements. This is what helped me. If you are interested, let me know and I will give you more info.
A good chiropractor or accupuncturist may also be able to help you. But be very careful and make sure you know the person you seeing knows what they are doing.
My friend's daughter had a migraine that lasted 3 years. She didn't try the supplements but almost everything else you can imagine. They finally took her to an acupunturist and the headache went away.

i started seeing a chiropractor for migraines (had them 3 or more times a week at one point) about 2 years ago. I can now count on one hand how many migraines i have had in the last 2 years!!! I maintian chiropractic care about once a month. If i could afford more, i woud go more often. No medication ever worked for me. It feels great to have a medication free relief for my migraines!! I feel your pain. Good Luck!

I have migranes since I was a child. The only drug that has ever worked for me is Excederin. The combo of asprin, acetminophin & caffine is the only thing that helps.

That being said I still try not to talk it all the time. My best freind when i have a migrane is an ice pack. I just strap it on my head & lay down. It is uncomfortable for the first couple minutes but then the cold starts to ease the pain.

Another good thing is Head On, just rub it on your head & it does the same (to a lesser extent) that an ice pack does. It is good for the onset to either slow or stop the migrane. Peppermint Oil also works but you will smell like a candy cane & be a little greasy.

There is what I call a migrane "hangover" the day after a bad migrane you just feel blah, a slight regular head ache etc. Just remember that a migrane is a physical ordeal & it will take time for your body to recover.

So at the first sign of a migrane pop an Excederin, drink plenty of water, & put something cold, pepermint oil or HeadOn on your forehead. Getting to it fast will help with the severity & duration. Then get to a quiet dark place & rest as best you can. Be sure that your girls understand that they need to help mommy by being quiet & that the sooner you get to rest the faster you will recover & get back to playign with them.

I do - My sis-in-law had severe migraines - actually lost her job cuz she missed so much work. That was 3 years ago - no migraines since!
It sounds crazy, cuz it's just adding a special food to your diet ever day.
It has natural anti-inflammatory properties that easily get into the brain, where drugs have a hard time getting there - that's cuz your brain has a barrier designed to keep out toxins, which drugs are full of.
If you're interested, please message me - It's a great product - it's helped everyone I know who has migraines - I just know we're not supposed to promote products on the site. This one is very special. No side-effects, either!

I love Maxalt. Imitrex didn't work as well for me either. I take a Maxalt and then if possible try to take about an hour long nap. Most of the time I wake up feeling almost completely better. I still may feel a little groggy, but even that doesn't last for long. Even if I am not able to rest, the Maxalt does a great job with the pain. There are two different pill forms. I like the one that dissolves in your mouth. It is more expensive, but if it does the trick, it is well worth it.

I too have had migraines since I was 14 (I am 40 years old now) I take Topamax, Flexeril, Sulindac, and Relpax for the onset. A very good recipe for prevention of migraines. I also STRONGLY recommend the chiropractor. I go to Godfrey Chiropractic in Altoona, Iowa. She has a massage therapist on staff and for your copay they will let you have a 30 minute or a 60 minute massage or the water table, electric stem (my personal favorite), the roller table. All of which are turned into insurances as apart of your adjustments. It is an amazing place to go. Just tell them C. Hamill sent you ###-###-####. My migraines have subsided a bunch since I have gone to see her. Seriously amazing and one reason I think so - she is a migraine patient herself. My other Dr. is Dr. Joellen Heims and Dr. Susan Kennedy down at Mercy Campus Clinic in Des Moines, Iowa ###-###-####). Amazing place to go as well. I hope some of these words of wisdom help. I have walked this walk for a very long time, so I feel like I can talk the talk a little bit. God Bless You!

Frova works very well, but it's also really expensive. Have you tried botox shots? I have a friend who gets botox for that reason only and her migraines are now just regular headaches. My husband used to get really bad migraines all the the time and on Christmas he had a TIA and ever since then, he hasn't had one. You may want to check with your Dr. about having an MRI or CT Scan done, to see if there is any neurological problem or if there are any signs of something about to happen like a stroke. Good luck to you.

I take Maxalt at the onset of a migraine but I have to lay down as it makes me very tired. The upside is the next day I feel great, no more extended days of feeling down. You still lose most of your one day from the migraine, but that's it. I also take Topomax daily as a migraine preventer. Good luck I know how bad it can be.

First let me say my migraine are not near as severe as yours but more frequent, so I hope this will work for you. I received an email from a friend recommending a chiropractor who she swore cured her migraine. Since my insurance covered it, I thought I would give him a try. He didn't completely eliminate my migraines but he greatly reduce the frequency and the severity. I dont go as often as he would like me to but when they start acting up, I am back in his office right away. Maxalt also worked well for me but it kind of made me drowsy and they are kind of expensive. My friend who gets the more severe migrains swears by Maxalt. Good luck!

I sympathyze with you about the migraines! i get them several times a month, and yes antidepressants actually DO help with migraines, trust me. I'm not saying you have depression, because you don't, but there is a class of antidepression medications called tricylics (like amitryptiline) that have also been found to be effecive in treating migraines. I am on 100mg of amitryptiline a day to help prevent migraines and it helps. Of course, each persn is different, so if yo go this route, your dose might be different. I am also on topamax..200mg daily.

You can ask your neurologist (I assume you go to one since your migraines sound horrible) about prescribing Midrin to take when one hits. (I think there is an over the counter Midrin, but the one I'm talking about is different and prescrition only). I use it, and it works really well. The only draw back is that you can only twice a week, but that shouldn't be an issue for you. You can also ask about a medication called DHE (it's actually some long name but it goes by those initials), but you should really see a neurologist for that one. Neither medication gives me a hangover, and both work exceptonally well.

Good luck finding something that works for you. Migraines are no fun!

That is the problem with Migraines - they are nearly unstoppable. If you find a solution, please let me kow! I get them too often to go to vicodin as it is highly addictive and I fear I will accidently get myself addicted to pain killers. Lucky you, I get them once a month or so.

For daytime I use a pill that is a mixture of butalbital/ASA/caffine plus a little OTC ibuprofin as recommended by my doctor. This helps knock back the symptomes (nothing makes them go completely away). In time I have learned to function this way. Talk to your doctor about alternatives is the best advice I can give you.

YES! I DO have an idea for you!!! I dealt with migraines most of my life. At their peak, I had the same symptoms as you described plus it affected my heart rate and breathing rate. Now, I get maybe 1 or 2 a year and actually don't even have a headache; just vision problem and tired.

I have told my personal "cure" to so many people over the years that I finally wrote it all down. Its too long to fit in this box but if you send me a personal message with your email address, I will forward it to you.

My heart breaks for migraine sufferers! That's why I had to write it all down and share it with as many as I can.

I feel your pain. I have also had these terrible migraines since age 6. I have also tried several remedies to mostly no avail. :( One thing that I have found helps is if I take medication at the very first sign of a headache. If I wait longer and it becomes full blown I tend to not be able to "keep it down". Also I figures out certain smells and/or environment, caffeine etc can be triggers. Good luck!

Absolutely! Migraines can be a vitamin deficiency and of course there are triggers you can avoid. Contact me and I can give you a few different things to try.

There are a few types of meds to take at the onset of a Migraine. I have suffered from these for years. Treximet is brand new, and way better than Imitrex alone. The Treximet is Imitrex with Naproxen in it. This has been a miracle for my migraines. Sometimes it completely stop the entire migraine from occuring, but mostly it limits the symptoms and shorten the life of the migraine to just a few short hours.

Sometimes I'll take one Vicodin with the Treximet, and that is to help ease the pain and fall asleep.

Hi,
I was given the best advice about migraines from a friend. They said to stay away from MSG and to drink lots of water. Alot of things have MSG that you would not think of such as dips and such. Try to avoid it and see if it helps. I take Imitrex even if I feel like a small headache is coming on and it works! Good luck!

Oh migraines are terrible, I suffer from chronic daily migraine. I started seeing a new neurologist last September and he prescribed a very low dose of Topamax. My migraine is gone and I don't have any side effects from the med. There are several new prescription rescue meds on the market now. If Imitrex does not work your neurologist should work with you until you find the one that does work for you. Narcotics such as vicodin are not always the best treatment for migraines as they can cause headache as they wear off or as a side effect. Do you know what triggers your migraine? strong perfume, disturbed sleep and missing meals are some of my triggers. Good Luck I hope that you find good relief from your migraines
