Hey Mamas!

I nuked a bag of microwave popcorn way too long and it burnt really bad. It totally stunk up my microwave and even turned the inside brown. I cleaned it with baking soda and the brown color won't come off and I can't get the burnt smell out. Any ideas on how to get the brown stain off and the smell out?

Thanks so much, as always!

What can I do next?

Have you tried the Mr. Clean magic sponges? They work wonders and this seems like a perfect job for them. As for odor, crumpled newspaper is a great absorber. My fridge once went out and the food went bad. The power company told me to wash it out and then fill the fridge with crumpled newspapers and leave overnight. Throw them away and see if it smells ok. If not, repeat. Good luck!

The same thing happened at my mom's house. She has a microwave above the stove, so she cleaned out the filter with dishwasher soap, scrubbed the micro with just hot water & soap. To get the smell out, she kept the door open for a couple days with a bowl of baking soda in it.

Good luck!!!!!

Boil a cup of lemon water for 4min to steam up the micro real good, and FYI the chemicals in the Micro bag drips back on to the popcorn, I would opt for a nice air popper. For the stain, try a salt paste with a little water .

boil 1 part vinegar and 1 part water for a few minutes in the microwave (and if it's real bad, I would just let this sit in there with the door closed for a while after it dings). While it's still hot and steamy in there, take your sponge and possibly some more baking soda or toothpaste works good too(I save mine when there all "done" and cut them open to get the rest out for cleaning stuff like the stove top-gentle abrasive!). The lemon juice suggestion sounds like it may be along the same lines-worth trying if the vinegar doesn't do the trick but it always works in my house and the yuck that is stuck in the microwave from mini-explosions is sure to wipe right off!!!

I used softscrub that contains added bleach. It is a paste that spreads on easily. I coated the inside of the microwave with it and let it sit for a few hours. I wet down the microwave first with a sponge. I did this twice and it got about 90% of the stain removed. Good luck.

we did that once...the problem is that greasy smoke. we'd clean it and the next time we used it the grease dripped down again from the top vents.

bon ami for the stains (i LOVE that stuff-non-toxic and works great)

set outside with door open for a bit, maybe a couple of days. unfortunately, the grease just takes time to dissipate. it was gone in about a month.

Hi K.!

I've done this before, and boy does it ever STINK!!!

The first thing I did was to open up the house and turn on the fans--even strategically placing them so that they would pull the bad air out of the kitchen and fan it outside. (We left the windows open and the fans on for about a day too) I tried all sorts of things, from lemon juice,to baking soda paste and letting it sit overnight, to vinegar, to cleaning aids...to leaving baking soda sprinkled in it...to leaving an odor-eater in it too...

It just seemed like NOTHING worked...But, I kept at it...

If one thing wouldn't work, then I would try another... I honestly think that in addition to whatever cleaning methods you try, TIME is one of the factors that worked... (Kind of like "time heals all wounds", time eventually helped the smell to dissipate...I even check online to see what tips I could find and tried all sorts of ideas... Every time I went by the microwave, I would wiped it down with something.

God luck!!! I bet from now on, you'll keep a close eye on the popcorn. :-) I now prefer to use the air-popper. It's even healthier for you. :-)

unused coffee grounds suck up smells. Leave a small dish overnight and it will soak up some of the smell. It takes time for the smell to totally go away though. dont know about the stain. maybe a magic eraser?

Baking soda is great for getting stains and smells out! You might try mixing some in water to make a paste, then using this to clean the microwave out with a sponge. For really bad, smelly stains, try coating the inside of the microwave with the paste and letting it sit there for a while before wiping it down. The baking soda dissolves the stain and absorbs the smell. I also use baking soda for heavily soiled baking pans (casseroles, roasts, etc.) ... just toss some in warm water and let the pan soak. It's safe, non-toxic, and works GREAT!
