At what age is normal to start your menstrual cycle? My oldest daughter is going to be 10 yrs. old in October and she has all the signs of PMS lately. The last couple of nights she has started crying for no reason. I have heard a few people say it is based on weight.

What can I do next?

I started when I was 11. But I have read information that suggests that the body will start changing and preparing for it before it happens.

I would talk to her about what is going on. If she has no explanation then it's very possible. Also, if this is the case, she is probably somewhat confused as these hormones are now running excessively throughout her body.

Best of Luck!

My daughter is 20 now and married, pregnant with her first baby. It is so wild to me that my baby is having a baby, not to mention i have a 7 yr old and a 20 month old lololol god bless and good luck

I was 10 when I started my period. I was younger than my friends when they started ... and was totally upset by starting so early! Ha ha! It was traumatic, but that was many years ago.

I've heard that girls are starting earlier nowdays, and hitting puberty earlier also -- related to the hormones that are now more prevalent in foods (milk, chicken, etc.).

She might be getting ready to start ... I wish you both the best if so! ;)

Generally between 9 years old and 16, I think that is the norm for starting. It does sound like she'll be starting soon. Most of the time, the girls will start around the same age as their mother did. I don't have daughters though so cannot tell you any more then that lol.. sorry.

Hi F.,

My daughter began hers at age 10. It was completely unexpected on our end. The doctors say with the environment the way it is, girls are starting much earlier now than before. So i would definately be on the watch! :)

I don't think it's based on weight at all, but I am not a doctor. I have heard of girls starting as young as 8, and a few of the girls I teach at church started around 11. So, if she does, she does, and it's probably normal. I hope this put you at ease.

it just depends i have friends that started as young as age 9 sometimes weight can cause it but it really just depends on the child and the level of their hormones

I started at 10 just a few months before I turned 11 . My sister it was about a week or 2 after she turned 10. We both started to develop before then. Also my mom sat me down and explain what was going to happen before I started I think I was 8 when she did that ( she saw blood in the tolet and freaked out because she thought I had started then) But her telling me about it helped alot because I was at school when it happen and that stopped me from freaking out. I hope this helps.
