Menstrual Cramps, but No period....weaning 11 Month Old Son

For the past 10 days I've had menstrual-like cramps and thought that my period was coming. My 11 month old son is only nursing one or two times per day, so I expected my period would return soon. Despite the cramping my period hasn't come and I’m getting a little concerned that something else might be going on. (I was on the mini pill with my oldest until I completed breastfeeding so I have no reference for how my body handles the natural return of menstruation after pregnancy and breastfeeding)

I am going to put in a call to my OB tomorrow for an appointment, but I thought I would see if anybody else out there has experienced similar cramping.

Thanks!

P.S. I am 100% certain that I am not pregnant.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I went to see the OB/GYN. She did an exam and a pap. She said that if there were cysts I probably would have been pretty uncomfortable. She thought that my body was getting ready to menstruate, but she couldn't say so conclusively. She ordered an ultrasound and instructed me to wait another week to go in if I was still feeling the cramps. Thankfully my period arrived before the ultrasound appoinment.

I felt like I was menstruating last week, but no bleeding at all. I'm still nursing my 14 month old and have not gotten my period back yet. I've heard from other women that they sometimes have this cramping for several months before finally ovulating and/or menstruating.

Best wishes!

I remember feeling on and off like I was going to get my period for about four months! Ugh. I felt the same as you did - cramps, but then no period. I weaned completely when my son was about seven months old and my period came about five weeks later... I talked to the doctor and she said it was totally normal. However, if you suspect something's wrong, definitely seek medical advice.

K., I didn't get my period until my son was 13 months old! However, I had cramps off and on for several months. So, I think it's normal. Just your body getting ready to change things up on you.

When my period returned after bf my son for a year I noticed that I would get cramps during ovulation. Luckily it only happened for a few months. But it does not hurt to check with your OB.

There is a bug going around that feels similar to menstral cramps. It has hit a few people that I know including myself. I think I had it the longest of anyone, about a week and a half or so, and I still have a little of the cramping feeling but not as bad. My husband got it the easiest only a day for him. This also included the loose stools which also can come with the period stuff. And I felt a little queasy too.

On the returning of menstruation after pregnancy and breastfeeding issue - my daughter was almost two years old before I started again. It was great! three years with out the period or mood swings!! But they are still not regular, I quit nursing her at 2 1/2 wich was about two months ago.

I felt the same way for about 6 months, and definitely more pronounced as I was weaning my little guy at about the same time. He is now 13 months (I stayed on the mini pill), and I had like 3 days of very light spotting and that was it... I am back to the regular pill as of this week, we'll see what happens when the period is "supposed" to come, as other than just those few days about 2 weeks ago there has been nothing. :) I hate the constant feeling though, it makes me afraid to wear anything light colored, I figure as soon as I wear white I'd be the lucky one, haha!
