Hi Moms,

I had my first baby 14 months ago, and stopped breastfeeding early december (so about 2 months ago). I started menstrating again when my son was about 10 months old and it has been really random, about every 2 weeks, sometimes even more often. I thought that maybe my body just needed some time to straighten back out, but this last month (Jan) I switched to regular birth control and I am still menstrating like every 2 weeks. Prior to being pregnant I was a 28 day regular, and I am going crazy dealing with a period so often! I called my OB office and they said I might need a different birth control, but I need to stay on this one for at least 3 months before I switch. Has this happened to anyone else? Thanks in advance for you advice and/or compassion!

What can I do next?

Not sure if this pertains to you but I know when women go through peri-menopause some bleed irregular. I don't know your age but I have heard of some women starting peri-menopause as early as 37 years old. So if you are younger than that then it could possible be the birth contral pills.

It can take up to three months when you are having irregular periods for a birth control pill to capture your cycles. That's why your OB is telling you to stick it out for three months before they switch you. Don't give up! Stick with it...

Yikes! What a tough situation. I have heard about similar situations being caused by birth control pills or being solved by them, but not being so persistent as what you are describing. If I were in your situation, I would see an acupuncturist that specializes in women's health to regulate your hormones.

The 2-week thing happened to me for about a year and in my case, my ovaries were doing their own thing, not working together! It took me about a year!

i don't know about having to stay on it for 3 months, i dealt with this for over a year before i said anything so my ob changed me right away. but, mine was due to the tri-hormone (ortho-tricyclen or generic) level type of bc. when i switched to one with a constant lower level (lo-estrin) it stopped right away. they may just want to make sure you're covered hormonally before you change.

For my first two kids it took 6 months to a year to get my periods to straighten out. I also breastfed for about a year. That being said, I did not start any hormonal birth control until about 6 months after I stopped breastfeeding so I have not idea what that would do to the irregularity. I just figure that it took 9 months of pregnancy and 12 months of nursing to get my body all screwed up, it just needs ample time to get it back on track.

I am sure it will work out as much of a pain as it is.

Good luck!

You are not alone! And yeah, I tried the 3 month thing, but it still continued. Finally, my doctor gave me a pill with a higher dosage of hormones, and that has done the trick!! I got on the mini-pill 6 months post-partum and never had a problem, but as soon as I stopped breatfeeding and got on the combined pill, it was downhill from there!?!?! All the best :)
