Menorrhagia

Hi Moms,

Have you suffered from menorrhagia? I'm in my early 40's and had my third baby last summer. With my previous two kids, I never had any problems. My cycles were regular up until over a month ago. I'm hoping that it's just my horomones readjusting, but I'm not sure since I've never bled this bad. I've had a strong, heavy flow for that last 50 days straight here. I had a trans vag ultrasound and bloodwork done, but it shows nothing. I was put on Balziva which was suppose to help stop the bleeding, but instead this drug has made it worse not to mention it has given me crazy mood swings. I'm going to see the OB this week again, but I wondered other people's experiences were with this condition.

Thanks,

M.

I am so sorry to hear about your suffering. I know exactly how you feel. I went through the same thing after having my third child. It started about five months after she was born. I suffered for three years before seeking help from a GYN. Thankfully I was working for a Women's hospital at the time and was referred to a great doctor who recommended that I have an endometrial ablation. This is a procedure that removes the lining of your uterus that sheds each month and causes the heavy bleeding. However, this procedure is only recommended for women who do not plan on having any more children. Since the lining of your uterus will be removed if you were to get pregnant the fetus would not have anything to attach to. The procedure is much less invasive than having a hysterectomy. Most women have very little to no discomfort after the procedure. I, on the other hand felt like I was in labor all night after the procedure. But, the next day I was fine and it was so worth it. My quality of life improved immediately. Now, I do not have a period at all. NO BLEEDING. I can usually tell when I would have been menstruating because I sometimes will get mild cramps -- but that is it. My advice to you is to talk to your doctor about the procedure to see if it is right for you. There is also some testing that needs to be done if you decide to have the procedure. Best of luck to you!

Yes something similar I had The following done

■Endometrial ablation. Using a variety of techniques, your doctor permanently destroys the entire lining of your uterus (endometrium). After endometrial ablation, most women have little or no menstrual flow. Endometrial ablation reduces your ability to become pregnant.

This is another procedure availiable:
■Endometrial resection. This surgical procedure uses an electrosurgical wire loop to remove the lining of the uterus. Both endometrial ablation and endometrial resection benefit women who have very heavy menstrual bleeding. Like endometrial ablation, this procedure reduces your ability to become pregnant.

I was 39 the cramping was getting so bad I couldn't get out of bed. I delt with the heavy bleeding for almost 6 years mine started with a IUD after my youngest was born. I was told though to have this procedure you need to be done having children. Mine were 17 and 9 almost 40 with a man who had a vasecimy at 21 after his son was born. Neither of use really wanted more children so it worked out for me. It was the best thing I every did. I didn't bleed at all for a year now I spot for one day once a month cramp a little that day only. And my spot I mean its enough to be noticiable but not enough to really even put in a panti liner. Its a big decission but everyone I know that has had it done loves it but one she ended up with a hystorectomy but I think that is what she wanted from the beginning and her doctor wouldn't do it because of her age (under 35)
Good luck with what ever you decide to do. I hope things get better for you.

I am sorry you are going thru this. It is always something, isn't it? I can provide natural support for the mood swings if you like, but the bleeding. Sorry, part of the "plan" any more. I can't tell you how many women I know who are ending up with this problem and then hysterectomies. Sad turn of events.

Hang in there.

One other thing to ask your OB about is PCOS, it is Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. most doctor's don't know much about it, but it could explain the prolongged bleeding. A friend of mine went about 3 1/2 years before she was diagnosed properly. She went bleed for anywhere from 30-60 days, and then stop for about 10-15 and start it all over again.

Hi M.,

Talk to you doctor about having Novasure done. It is a form of the ablation. I had it done in 2008 and haven't had a period since, I was 43 at the time. It works with 90 % of women and 10 % it doesn't. But,10 % of women have to have a hysterectomy later on.For me my PMS is gone too. If you are done having kids, I would go for it.

Good luck

I had my fourth child before I turned 35. 2 years later I started to bleed heavily. I convinced my doctor to do a hysterectomy. I had fibroid tumors and was tired of dealing with the heavy bleeding and was not planning for more kids. It was done vaginally and it was the best decision I ever made. I did keep my ovaries which is controversial at best. I never suffered from hot flashes, however.
