Anyone have experience with memory foam mattress toppers?
I've had back pain on and off since my first pregnancy. We had one of those mattresses that are "his and hers," where one side is firm and the other softer. All along I've insisted on having the firm side (my husband could sleep on concrete if he's horizontal so he doesn't care) thinking that is better for the back.
A few months ago we went out of town to visit family and we slept on a very soft, very old mattress. I thought I would be miserable, but halfway through the week I realized my back hadn't felt that good in years!
So back at home, we'd been thinking of replacing our mattress anyway and when we got a Groupon to a mattress store we went for it.
Went to the store, I told the guy my story, he recommended this particular mattress that he claimed was the perfect combination of firm support but softness too. And bonus, it was on clearance so it was a great deal...but their usual guarantee did not apply. We were blinded by the deal and the assumption that a new mattress with those supposed qualities had to be better than our 10 year old one.
We've had it for about a month and my back is killing me. It is too firm. So now we're looking at a memory foam mattress topper.
The reason I told this long boring story is that I'm hoping to hear from people who have had similar experiences - using a mattress topper to add softness to a too-firm, but supportive, mattress.
Some specific concerns I have are:
1. I've read that they are hot - that they make you hot when sleeping on them. I already run warm at night, would hate to wake up sweaty!
2. I don't quite get how standard (even "deep") sheets will fit if you add a topper to your mattress that is 2-3 inches thick as they seem to run- do you use the same size sheets or do you have to go up a size or what?
I don't know what other responses you've gotten, but for us, the firm mattress + the memory foam mattress topper is heaven. I run cold at night, but hubby runs warm (REALLY warm!). He's never had problems. The topper we got at Sam's club for $100 or so!

We have used one for about 10 years now. We live in Vegas, so it does get pretty hot here, but we have AC. In Vegas, hot is hot and not much makes a difference.
My daughter calls it the marshmallow.

we have one.. ours has little holes in it that apparently help with the overheating. It does get a bit warm, but so far it hasn't bothered me and I hate to be warm. It does make the bed more comfortable but it isn't 'perfect'... but I like it better than without. We currently are using our regular sheets and we have our mattress, the foam pad and a feather bed.. we just wanted to see what that combo was like :). The sheets go on fine, they do seem to come off easier during the night, but we don't have huge issues.

A few years ago I replaced my mattress with an expensive pillow top, and within a few months we had dips from our side sleeping and my back was killing me. I started with the smallest memory foam topper and it worked okay. After a year, I got I think a 2 or 3 inch topper. It is wonderful. I don't find that it runs hot at all. We use deep sheets. Honestly, most of the time they just cover the topper. The only issues I have with the topper, after 2 yrs, it is getting flatter, and it gets pulled around the bed, so I am constantly trying to pull it back. But it does help with the back pain. I found some cheap memory foam mattresses at Just Cabinets that I may consider next year.

I have a 3 inch memory foam topper on my bed. I use a thick mattress pad on top of it. My sheets fit fine but a little more difficult to put on. I had hot flashes before the topper, nothing has changed there.

I agree with everyone else! We bought one a couple years ago at Sam's hoping to avoid buying a new bed. It worked! Not only have we been able to delay getting a new bed, we don't wake up with back pain and we sleep great! The kids always want to sleep in our bed....maybe I need to get one for them, too!

You can buy sheets for up to 20 inch thick mattresses. Maybe they would work. I know from experience that the firm ones we all though would be best for backs are not usually best. The softer mattresses are better, firm but not hard. I was told that pillow top is not good to buy as when the pillow top flattens over time it's not good but I did get one for our guest bedroom and it is so much better for my back too. Try the larger sheets though if you want a better fit.

We have a 2 1/2 " foam topper w/ gel beads - it is AWESOME! I would highly recommend getting one. It has made a huge difference for us. My sheets were already deep pocket sheets (only b/c that is all they sell now!) so fitting the topper was not a problem. I haven't noticed being hotter and I get hot easily.
I say go for it! We got ours at Costco - way cheaper than anywhere else. Keep the receipt - that way you can take it back if you don't like it.

I have a firm mattress with a pillow top. Well, the pillow top is not so pillow-ee so I added a memory foam topper. I loved it. It added a softness but retained the firmness of the mattress. I did not find it hot. Most of my sheets still fit, though they would sometimes pop off a corner.
Sigh, now it is on my son's bed and I have a cheaper topper. But that is another story. LOL

We bought a Memory Foam topper at Costco because we were almost to the point of needing a new mattress and we thought it would stretch the life of it. We really like it. I don't like to be too hot when I sleep and I haven't found a problem with it. You do have to really tug and pull to get the sheets on, but the deep pocket ones will work. I don't like a really firm mattress either, so the topper is great for me.
We've had ours for about a year and haven't had that "we need a new mattress" discussion since we bought it.

We bought some memory foam mattress pads from Walmart and we really them. We sleep deeper, but had a few days of adjustment to it. My hubby had some back pain, but it is gone now. Our sheets would come off on my side, but that is the way I toss and turn, but with the mattress pad, they don't come off now.Our daughter loves hers, but our son doesn't. I have to get a another mattress pad cover for his bed,so that will help. The ones from Walmart run about $35 and up.

We bought one for my 9 year old's twin bed (his standard mattress was kind of hard) and it seems to really be comfortable for him. We also bought one that was only a few inches thick with the holes in it so it doesn't seem to get as warm as some could. His normal mattress pad along with his twin sheets fit perfectly fine and don't come off in the night.

I love memory foam! It can shift around between changes of sheets sometimes but the extra comfort has been worth it. I had the corners of the sheets pop off before getting the memory foam so it isn't that big a difference to me.
