It works great and you won't feel tired in the morning. You just need to take it and go lay down. it's not going to make you feel like you can't stay awake, but it will help you relax and be able to fall asleep.
I am having a problem getting a good night sleep. A friend mentioned Melatonin. Give me your thoughts and opinons and helpful hints on this. I like to be well informed before I a decision.

I use it fairly often and it works wonders. Helps me get to sleep and sleep more soundly without the left over drag in the morning that other sleep aids can cause.
J.,
I use 3mg every night. I've done it for years, and even give 1/2 of a tablet to my 12 & 13 yr olds when they need it.
No worries, no problems! Just a great way to sleep!!!
Hi J.,
Melatonin is safer alternative than prescription sleep aides. But because your body makes this substance, using it for more thatn just a short period of time can cause your body to stop making it on its own. Another choice is valarian. It is an adaptigen that brings your body into balance. Shaklee makes an excellent product with valarian called Gentle Sleep Complex. You can find it at http://www.shaklee.net/healthforllife

My son took Melatonin. It worked to a degree. What we found worded even better is Valerian Root. If you decide to try the Valerian Root, plug your nose. It smells like stinky feet - yuck, but my son said that it worked so well he asked for it even as a little guy (about 6). Good luck.

I started giving my child melatonin at age 3 because he did not sleep well at night. We did this until he was 6. He is now 8 and has regular sleeping habits. There were no side effects what so ever. My doctor recommended it to us at that time. It was a blessing to us and it only cost a couple of dolllars!!!
I've been trying it recently and it works well for me. but I also read some very interesting things about it in a book called "The Menopause Thyroid Solution" by Mary J Shomon, I'll give you a brief summary of the info but I will say that I will definitely continue taking melatonin after reading about it. First of all it recommends that you take a pharmaceutical grade synthetic melatonin, as some natural formulas contain animal brains which may or may not contain harmful ingredients. the recommended dose is from .3 to 3.0 mg. I take 3.0mg I do have vivid dreams on occasion and headaches can be a side affect, since I'm prone to Migraines this is a concern, so I will watch to see how that goes. Melatonin comes from the pineal glad and it helps keep other hormones in balance, as well as regulates sleep, the circadian clock. research shows that it is very helpful for women going through Perimenopause and can help balance menstrual cycles, I'm going through perimenopause and I did notice that my last cycle was SO MUCH better this last cycle but I didn't know why till I read this part of the book, now I can say that it was better because of the melatonin, I'm going through my 2nd cycle on melatonin now (with some other side issues) so we will see how it affects me this time.
there is so much more in the book (2-3 pages of info) you might look for it at the library or book store and just read those pages, it is very interesting. the bulk of the melatonin research in this book comes from the work of Walter Pierpaoli, MD and his book "the Melatonin Miracle: Nature's Age Reversing, Disease fighting, Sex Enhancing Hormone" which will be my next book to read!
hope this was helpful, if you have any other questions please feel free to email me off board, I don't know if you are going through perimenopause yet but if you are and have any questions I'll be glad to share what I've learned so far,
One of the first things people say taking Vemma besides more energy and a sense of wellness is that they sleep so much better. No side effects with natural food. Take a look. For ages 2 to 102. I am so grateful a doctor shared it with me. http://annnoble.vemma.com I don't meant to sound like a commercial, but I speak the truth about hearing everyone say they sleep so much better.
i use it every night and love it. i use to be able to sleep through a tornado but once i had my dd i wake up at every little noise. the great thing about melatonin is while you're getting a deeper sleep you're still fully aware of everything, at first i was concerned that it would knock me out and i was concerned about needing to get up for my dd. but that's not the case at all. plus there are no side effects (it actually helps with my high blood pressure) and don't feel groggy the next morning, it's perfect and highly recommend it. it's cheap so you can always just throw it away if you don't like it. good luck.
Hello J.,
you can also try putting a few drops of lavender oil on your pillow or on a tissue next to you. Also, make sure you're getting enough magnesium and vitamin D along with your calcium. are you getting your B-complex vitamins. no caffeine after 2pm, etc. you can put a few drops of lavender oil on your neck/back to help you relax. you can also drink chamomile tea (if you're not allergic to ragweeds) Good luck! ~C.~
I used it for a while and it seemed to help, but I did have a side effect. The first night I took it, I had the worst nightmare I have had in a long time. Luckily, this only happened the first night. When I checked for side effects on the internet, nightmares was listed. Would not keep me from taking it, just wanted you to know that that was possible.
if you are waking up because of noises, i would recommend sleeping with ear plugs and a rotating fan to hum out the noises. i did this and i sleep so much better! also your diet during the day... caffiene, yeast products, not enough fresh air... good luck.
I use it to help me get rest it works great. Also valerian works good too.
My son's neurologist reccommended it for him almost two years ago, we've been using it since then, and it seems to work really well without any side effects. He takes one pill every night and is usually asleep within 30 minutes of taking it.
I use a very low dose of Melatonin for my 11yr old son when he has trouble going to sleep. He ped doctor said that would be fine. I used it as well but now I use Valerian. It helps me a great deal getting to sleep. I have tried RX drugs and they knock you out or make you feel foggy. Also with RX drugs must taken a certain time before bed because they last for so many hours. I can take the Valerian just a little before going to bed now matter what time it is and then I read until I am sleepy. Go to a health store and get the best quality herb. I just tried different sleep aid herbs and over a period of time I found the one that works for me. These that I noted above work with your natural body system and will actually help you get back your sleep cycle. I know what it is like having trouble with going and staying asleep. Good Luck!
It certainly is safe to try but I did not have any helpful results using the melatonin.
We've used Melatonin, both myself and my Son. My recommendation is to use the smallest dose 1/2 tablet. I believe we have the 1 mg dosage. It is very powerful/strong.
I used it on a regular basis and found out the hard way that it isn't for long term use. I used it every night and after 2-3 months of using it, I eventually couldn't sleep at night. It is only effective for 1-2 months, very short term use. We use it for our son only when he has trouble sleeping, when he is up past 10:30 or so. It didn't say this on the package. I did some research on the internet and found this out that way.
There isn't any side effects that I can tell with it. It is great, however I wish it was a long term use type product but it isn't.
I also took a Tylenol PM and used that for awhile to help me sleep. I know that isn't the best either to take for long term use.
I eventually went to a Dr. and got some prescription medication to help me sleep, however it also helps me with anxiety/depression.
Hope this helps!
I know you have received great advice already and I am a few days late, but I just wanted to tell you. My 6 year old nephew has taken melatonin for several years. It was prescribed to him by his doctor. It works great for him. I also was having problems sleeping and my gynecologist recommended it to me because he takes it. I don't take it on a regular basis, but when I do it really helps. I feel that it relaxes me enough to go to sleep. It doesn't knock me out right away like some sleep aids can do. It is more of a natural "I am tired" feeling. I have taken it at midnight or one in the morning and still been able to wake up at 6:30 without feeling groggy. I really like that part of it, because I do not have to plan 8 to 10 hours in advance that I am not going to be able to sleep. When I am laying in bed really late and cannot sleep, I can take it and still be okay when I do need to get up. Even in that short timespan I get a restful sleep too.
Good luck.

My 10 yr old nephew uses it, he has nightmares and talks in his sleep. It works for him. My sis likes it b/c it is all natural and non-addictive. She doesn't want him on medication but schools was suffering so she had to do something. He needed to get good quality sleep and now he does.
If Melatonin doesn't work for you, this is what my 2 teenage sons take to sleep, and their Dr said it's fine. Melatonin was given the OK as well, but didn't work for them, even at 9mg per night.

Good Luck. I finally had to go on prescription sleep meds... do what ever you have to to get your sleep.

My husband has a high stress job and has problems falling asleep and staying asleep. He takes Melatonin every night now, and it REALLY helps! He said it doesn't leave you groggy in the morning like the prescription drugs did to him.
You probably already have 500 responses, but here is one more. My husband travels alot and he gets off of a normal schedule regularly. He takes Melatonin with him and it works great for him. It is a substance that the body naturally secrets anyway, so all is good. Helps him get back in a good sleeping pattern and he has never had any side-effects from it at all.
I've been taking it on and off for the past week. I must say - when I take it, it really improves the quality and length of the consecutive hours of sleep that I get. I've tried Lunesta - prescribed sleep aid - and prefer Melatonin.
Melatonin is a natural substance that the body makes. It is a non addictive sleep aid. Some people use it to help get themselves in a sleep pattern others use it routinely. I personally have never used it rather I use caffine because I would much rather be asleep. Make sure that there aren't any other issues such as thyroid, depression, etc that can be causing sleep disruptions. Always ask your doctor, but Melatonin is a safe "drug free" option to help you catch some ZZZZs. Good Luck

I take Melatonon for occasional sleeplessness. They come in various mg strengths. For me I take 3 of the 5mgs & I sleep 7-8 hrs straight. No problems in the morning either. They are non addictive too. My husband only has to take 2 of the 5mgs & he weighs 340 & is 6ft 4. Way taller & heavier. So you just have to figure out what your body needs. Its best to take on the weekend if possible to see how many you need.
Our grandsons doctor told us about them because he has ADHD & is BiPolar & sometimes finds it hard to wind down enough to sleep more than a couple hours. But he takes 1 of the 3mgs as needed & he is just fine next day.
I hope this helps you.
I have used Melatonin in the past. It mostly aids in helping you get to sleep. I had good results. Always woke feeling rested and never felt groggy. Give it a try.
My son was prescribed Melatonin while he was a patient at Children's Medical Center for almost four months because his illness and recovery had left him really messed up on his sleep. The doctors assured me it is very safe because it's a product your body produces naturally anyway. I would say that it did its part to help him get his body back into a natural rythem of sleep vs. awake. I don't think it will hurt you to try it and along with that make sure you aren't sabatoging (sp) yourself with things that could affect sleep (caffeine late in the evening, naps during the day to catch up on missed sleep (that's a big one for me)). Best wishes on a good night's sleep very soon.
I have been taking melatonin for the last 3 years, to aid in my falling asleep. With the stress I have been under it for me has been miraculous! I go to Sam's Club and buy it in bulk. I did try sleep aid's before, but I always woke up feeling all groggy and icky, Melatonin does not do that. Also, when I was at an appt for my husband and mentioned it, the DR thought it was good for that. The only warning on the bottle says do not take more than 10mg. The one I take is Schiff Melatonin Plus with Theanine (for stress) 300 pills per bottle. Each pill is 3mg, never had a problem with the dosage. At Sam's, this bottle is under $10.
sorry, didn't read other responses (hitting the sack soon) ;)
just wanted to offer that a simple liquid calcium/magnesium supplement has helped my husband (me too, i suppose, but i haven't had troubles sleeping like he has...)
best wishes for some good snooze!
Dear J.,
About melatonin I take i and it is wonderful.I have read a lot of papers that say it is good for you. But you can go to Wal-Mart and get a bottle and don't have to pay arm and leg for it .It is just as good as what comes from Health food stores. I have a friend that runs one and I askher about it because I knew she would be honest. She said only difference was the price.
Won't hurt you to try it.
Good luck
J. G
My husband takes it every night and it has really helped him!
I sleep well with no side effects from taking
