Meeting New Friends

We arrived in Germany November of last year. My daughter, the little social creature she is, is really anticipating new friends. My son goes to school so he is all set. I can't seem to find other moms with kids my daughter's age; they're either older or younger. Either is fine, but I'd like her to learn about herself through play with other kids her age, too (well, truth be told, primarily). How have you met folks in winter when the neighborhoods are baron!? LOL!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for responding, ladies! We're in Mannheim so we've got a few things to look into. Winter was NOT the prime time to get to Germany! LOL!!! The grey skies and no snow really depressed me. UG! But, it will get better and I'm looking forward to trying new things. Thanks again...I know the flowers say "good job" but I just wanted to send you a thank you for your kindness!

Not sure how old your daughter is or what part of Germany u live in, but mops is an option for meeting new friends. You can contact your local Chapel and find out if your community has a group....I know Mannheim has one but not sure where u r located. Good luck

Hi there!

I'm also in Germany, and my kids weren't in school yet when we moved here. I found a couple of playgroups, and that has helped immensely! We started out with one a week, then found another, and would do two a week. My kids started seeing the same faces every week, and it didn't take long for them to make some friends. Another idea is library story times. They usually have a craft time, and the kids can be around each other. After meeting some moms and the kids making some friends, we've just branced out and done many more, unorganized activities with our new friends to keep busy. We are in the Ramstein area, and if you are too, then let me know and I can give you the times and places of the playgroups that I know of. :) Hope that helps!

Hi! Welcome to Germany! I live in Wiesbaden and am also a SAHM. My hubby is deployed so we have to find lots of things to do too. Check with the library on post and the chapel. Our USO also has a kid's program and so does the gym. There are usually programs out there but they are not always very well advertised. Good luck!

We are at Ramstrin and I know that there are allot of activities for the kids to do. I am a SAHM also and I take my kids bowling and my little on is also in Gymnastics thru the youth center. I know on Vogelweh at the Community Center that they have Bounce Afternoons on Tuesday and there is a play group at Kid Zone on Pulaski on Thursday mornings. Then there is always the parks in the summer. My daughter always meets a new friend everytime we go!

Yes, playgroups are usually with the CDC...or look into your CYS programs...some have mommy/toddler classes...

I went to an EDIS playgroup --even if your child does not have any developmental delays...we still participated there as well. Maybe through your Church...if you go to church..maybe there are programs in that area too. I hope you find what you are looking for! Take care.

Most posts have mommy and me playgroups available, also the CDC has part day preschool. You didn't indicate the age or your daughter. I enjoy taking my daughters to the swimming pool. Germany has fabulous indoor pools. You could also just ask people over to your house. I find that to be the easiest way to make friends.

Where in Germany are you? We are near Ramstein and there are a ton of activities for preschool aged kids through the youth center. How old is she? That would be a more social/active time, or you could try preschool library story times? Also our village apparently has a playgroup that meets in the community center on cold days, but I think that is just in the summers. Perhaps you can ask around your village about that, but of course the kids will just make do with their own languages! It has never seemed to be a problem!
