I already have a 3 year old and we are wanting to get preggo again. However, I have an anxiety disorder that I have been taking a low dosage of Paxil for - I have since stopped taking it but am living miserably. I can't sleep, I am irritable, uncomfortable and very anxious - does anyone have any advise on this matter? I am trying to find out if there is anything I can take during this period of time to ease the discomfort or it is a major life decision that I have to make to just not get pregnant again- and we really want 1 more. Please tell me if you have gone through this or what your thoughts are. Thank you!

What can I do next?

I have also had great results with Zoloft. I think it has helped with my anxiety tons.. and I took it while I was pregnant and while I am breastfeeding.

I was on Paxil for anxiety and felt really good so I decided to get off of it and the side effects of not being on it were afwul. I belive I was in a worse state with my anxiety after I got off the Paxil then before I took it. I then wanted to get pregnant but needed medicine to function, so the doctor said it was a good idea to take Zoloft. My son is two now and there is NO noted side effects on his part because i took zoloft while being pregnant.

You have my sympathy. Anxiety is terrifying and it is so very tough to function without the meds that you need. I couldn't have made it through my pregnancy without my psychiatrist's help. You may want to try her: Nancy Arko ###-###-####. She is the first psychiatrist that I have actually liked personally. Most of them are weird and, as I'm sure you know, just want to write the Rx and get you out of there as fast as possible. Nancy takes the time to actually talk with you and discuss medication change options. She is also very patient and flexible. I bet she'll be able to come up with some way to help you manage your anxiety without having to take Paxil. (By the way, every one of my doctors told me Paxil has been proven to cause problems in fetuses, so you are being very wise to stay off of it.)

C., I really don't want to come off preachy. I would just like to share with you my own personal story. I have also recently been thinking about having another baby. Even though I really want another child, I'm not sure that it is a good idea for my family because I have a hard time handling what's on my plate now. Just a thought about the big picture. Good luck finding what works.

I had anxiety disorder before and during my pregency and I never had to stop taking my meds. I was on zoloft during my pregnency and nothing happend to my son and I was on afexcer before I was pregnent so talk to your docter and get back on your meds there is no need to suffer like you are. I hope this helps you a little bit.

Zoloft is supposed to be nicer to mamas who are trying to conceive and breastfeeding than Paxil. Definitely talk to your doc about your options. Withdrawal from an antidepressant can be worse than any side effects. Your doctor and you may decide that the risks of your anxiety to your future pregnancy may not be as bad as the side effects of Paxil AND vice versa.

http://safefetus.com/ gives information on medicines that are deemed safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It can be confusing, though, since it has given some conflicting information on Zoloft (compared to the info I got from doctors).

(I was prescribed Zoloft while breastfeeding, but after doing my research, and knowing myself and how I've handled depression drug-free at much much worse times, I decided not to take it.)

Best wishes.

Hi C.- I suffer from an anxiety disorder as well. I recently visited the doc because I felt like I needed to get back on meds. I talked w/ her about getting on a medication I can take while I'm prego. We have a little girl, but are wanting more children later on, and I didn't want to get used to taking something and have to quit. She put me on Effexor. It's an anxiety med. that can be taken all the way up to your 3rd trimester. She told me that my sanity w/ my 2 yr old is what they want to keep most normal when I would get prego. So she said the OB may want to even stay on it all the way through the pregnancy just so I don't get the attacks in my 3rd trimester. She also said there wouldn't be any side affects other than possible low birth weight, and/or the baby needing to wing himself/herself off of the medication. So I've been taking this med about a month now and I feel like a totally different woman. I too have taken Paxil, Prozac, Zoloft, Wellbutrin, on and on to get this under control and I can honestly tell a difference w/ this med. Hope you find one that will work for you and w/ your situation as well..Good luck!

I was on Paxil before getting pregnant too. I was not on it for depression, but for what I was on it for, we did not want to take me off of it. My doctor said that it would be safe for me and the baby to stay on it during my pregnancy. So I did stay on my Paxil through my entire pregnancy.
I would suggest talking to your doctor and make sure that it too would be safe for you and the baby and get back on it. It's not worth feeling the way you do, if you can be back on the Paxil.

Hi C.~
I ge horrible anxiety! I take prozac for it. I went off it with baby number two and I was the most horrible person in the world. With baby number 3 I've decided to stay on it and I'm a completely different person. My doctor says it doesn't effect the baby, infact he'll probably be more mellow because of it. I feel for you and I know what you're going thru. All I can say is you're health is the most important and you dont' want to stres the baby out. I would ask your doctor about taking prozac. I only take a small dosage and it works wonderful (10mg) I actually take floroxitine, which is the generic form of it. Good luck!

You might try looking into bach flower essences. I have a few friends who are currently using them for their kids with ADD and other anxiety conditions and are having great results. And I'm pretty sure they are safe for use during pregnancy.

If you need help finding someone to help you out, I have a few referrals I can give you if you are interested.

Hi C. my name is S. and i can definately relate to what is happening to you. I was recently switched to Celexa from paxil by my OBGYN because i am of child bearing age. I am glad for the switch because i just found out that i am pregnant. I took the paxil through my entire last pregnancy and had no issues with it so i am lucky. But my Ob said that the celexa was a good alternative to the paxil. please let me know if i can offer any other advise and good luck to you.
Best wishes,
S. in UTah
