If it's not severe I would recommend holding off because the side effects are pretty bad.
Have you moms out there found that the meds (prilosec, zantac? etc) work? my dr. wants to put my son on them and I want to make sure they actually work from other moms before I start my 4 month old on medication......
We put him on 4ml of Prilosec suspension and he is doing soooo much better, we also switched him to a lactose free formula which helped with the amount of spit up as well! thanks so much to you all for your advice!!!

My daughter went on them as a baby, I think she was about 3 months old, She was on reglin (not sure of spelling) and zantac. It didn't do much for the spitting up but it did help her feel better. She went off of it at 1 but a little after that went on prevacid. This has been so great. She was up all night with reflux just crying. Now that we have her on the prevacid she is sleep just fine. A good thing that work also is to but a phone book under the mattress in the crib to elevate there head. This helps a lot at bedtime but if your child is like mine was at 4 months she spit up night and day.
It worked for my first baby & did nothing for my second. From what I understand it works on some babies and not on others. I would base your decision of whether or not to try on how miserable your babe seems and whether or not the reflux is affecting his growth (is he gaining weight and growing ok?).
They worked for my Daughter. She was like a new baby. If your baby is really miserable I say listen to your Dr and let him take the meds. My Daughter had GERD which is severe reflux and it was the best thing I ever did. And now she is fine and doesn't need it anymore!
Good Luck I hope your baby feels better soon. :)
Hi D. -
Our son was put on that right after he was born and all it did was make him sick. I'd stay away from reflux meds. If you go online to look at side effects of the medicine, you will be horrified enough to keep him off of it.
Good luck, L.
My son is 4 months old now and has severe G.E.R.D. He was put on reflux medicine after being a month old. The very first one we used was Axid, and it made a difference. He wasn't crying and screaming after every single feed, but then it stopped working. So they gave us prilosec which was a compund medication. It was horrible, I hated it. I hated giving it to my son. It smelled awful, and it didn't work for him, he was back to screaming and crying all the time. He is now on prevacid. Which does make a difference. Yes, he still spits up, but he smiles. It's not the screaming and agony before. We are finally going for a GI appointment in May to find out. Another thing I did that helped him sleep better at night was elevate him 45 degrees. We bought a wedge that goes underneath the crib sheet and rolled up 2 blankets and put them on either side of him to keep him from rolling around off the angle. Good luck.. I hope he feels better soon.
