Medication Question - Novi,MI

This is the third week of my illness and I don't really feel better. At first it was dry cough, and now it's a loud, productive cough that produces mucus. I also have a headache and somewhat stuffy nose with green discharge. I've had a constant tightness in my chest for 3 weeks. My breathing is a bit shallow and wheezy (slightly). I'm just coughing so much it all hurts. Bronchitis? Risk for pneumonia (which I have no idea what the symptoms are)?

I'm not asking if I need to go to the Dr. I am going tonight.

My question is, I might be pregnant, so...? I don't want to take ANY medicine if it's not really needed at this critical stage in development of the baby. Nor do I want an x-ray. Period was August 3rd so a home pregnancy test would only show negative right now, right? And the Dr. office says they can't tell any sooner than the home tests.

What to do?

What can I do next?

Put honey in hot tea, and if you can get local honey then that's even better. Use green tea or chai tea. Chai tea has green tea and a blend of other teas plus some additional spices that are good for illnesses. Hot tea can help break up the mucus and soothe your throat as well as your stomach and sinuses.

Try to get in the shower so the steam can help your lungs and sinuses.

It sounds like a nasty infection.

When pregnant I was always given the green light for Tylenol products, like Tylenol Cold and Sinus. Also for Sudafed, original. Sudafed didn't do a thing for me but the Tylenol helped a little.

all medications are given a grade for the level of safety while pregnant. some are know to be harmful, others it is unknown if they are safe, others are known to be safe. Your doctor will know which meds are safe to take while pregnant. It is not necessary to avoid all med while pregnant.

Hi J.,

First...Congratulations! =)
drink plenty of water. you can also drink herbal teas like anise seed (no caffeine) (good expectorant) you can also make a "thyme and basil" tea (no caffeine) you can use essential oils like peppermit, eucalyptus to help with the cough. you can take some magnesium (CALM/ which is magnesium citrate). if your stomac can tolerate it... eat extra onions and garlic. Make some pesto with lots of basil if you don't feel like making the tea.... these are every day things you can take and help you feel better.
God Bless! ~C.~

No I'm sorry if you ake a home pregnancy test and it says no. Your not pregnant. I have taken a home pregnancy three ads after my scheduled Reid n gt a positive if your regnant this s going on two wees after August 3rd it should shw up. Besides that a sinus infection bronchitis or whatever you have can delay a period plus you old be skipping one if you been under a lot f stress.

they can tell with a blood test at this point - demand a blood test and refuse the x-ray at this time unless they deem it absolutely necessary. take what they feel you need, it's always a risk vs benefit, no, it's not ideal for you to take meds during pregnancy, but it's not good for the baby for you to be sick either. if you have an infection, be SURE to take your antibiotics, if you don't wanna take the "symptom alleviating" meds for your own personal comfort, that's your business, but be sure to take what is needed to get yourself well.

If you don't take care of yourself the baby won't have a healthy environment to grow in. Tell the doc you are trying to get pregnant and that you want to make sure the antibiotic won't hurt a baby is you are actually pregnant.

Call you pharmacist and ask if there are any antibiotics that are totally safe for a fetus. If any are safer than others. Ask about breathing treatments, infants can take those at birth so they may be safe for a baby. Often the doc will do those to get the goo runny enough to get it up and out.

Then you can just ask the doc if one of those would be good for you to take.

If the mucus was not green I'd say just go get some Tussin (normal, not any other additives) to break up the goo in your lungs.

i prefer getting it out of the sinuses and up from the depths of the lungs by using Tussin and real Sudafed first. But I do not have any ideas on how those meds effect a fetus.

Go to the doctor and let him figure it out?

You could use a vaporizer for the congestion. Add some eucalyptus drops and that should help. Instead of cough syrup from the pharmacy or store, some honey in hot water would be soothing. Eucalyptus drops should be added to the water.

If there's the possibility for pneumonia, get to the doctor and follow those instructions.

And strange that it sounds rub castor oil on your chest. That also helps.

Honey water. Warm to hot honey water. That is natural, and the more natural organic honey and healthy water, the better. And organics are not going to be a threat to possible pregnancy. But it should help to break up the mucus and soothe the cough until the doctor suggests something. Also a humidifier. Cool mist would be best but a humidifier.

I had a cold once that hung on for 8 weeks.
I had no fever but kept coughing all the time till my chest muscles were sore from it.
I saw a doctor, but I was doing everything right already and didn't need any medicine.

Rinse your nose out with warm saline (use a neti pot) as often as you like.
Use a humidifier at night and take long steamy showers (cough up as much as you can in the shower).
Use a heating pad on low on your chest.
Vicks Vapor Rub on my neck and chest always helps me (I tried the feet and socks thing but it did nothing for me except make my feet soft).
Drink plenty of fluids - tea, soup, water, juice, ginger ale.
Some echinacea tea might help boost your immune system.
Stay away from dairy for awhile - it can thicken your mucus making it hard to drain or cough up.
You might be pregnant or you might not - you'll know more in 2-4 weeks.
I'm not sure how well conception/implantation will work while you are sick but only time will tell.

The best thing you can do is get yourself better. The best way to protect they baby you MAY be carrying is to assume you are (no xray unless absolutely medically necessary) and be sure that whatever you take is safe for baby (no asprin or Motrin...Tylenol only and regular Robitussin ...there are other things to so ask the doctor when you go).

Blood tests can tell sooner, can't they? Meanwhile, drink A LOT, and put Vicks VapoRub on your chest and neck/throat and back. It sounds like a sinus infection that's run amok, but don't hold me to it. Rinse your nasal passage with water and salt. These are all things that should not affect a pregnancy. The throat is probably sore from sinus drainage and maybe breathing through your mouth while sleeping. If you wear a surgical mask, it will keep all the air from hitting your throat and irritating it further.

Chamomile tea will flush your system and is safe during pregancy. But you need to drink a pot full in one day.

I usually recommend mixing mint with chamomile to improve the flavor but pennyroyal is a member of the mint family and can cause miscarriage. Be careful of mint tea.

There are antibiotics that are safe in pregnancy, so it isn't like you can't take them. If you have a sinus infection, you really have to take care of that. I had a misdiagnosed sinus infection and ended up having to have surgery for it. You don't want THAT to happen to you, I promise.

Your doctor knows what medicines are and aren't safe for pregnancy - a lot better than the moms on Mamapedia.
