Has anyont been snorkeling in Maui? If you know or have an idea of how much it costs to rent snorkel gear in Maui, I would appreciate anyone letting me know! We are going to Maui in June and are wondering if we should bring our own or if it's better to rent there and not use up the space in our suit cases.

Tthanks in advance!!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I’m SO glad I asked this question! I was really 50/50 on what to do but I think I’ll go with not taking ours and just renting. The reason being is because we realized that we would need to buy new gear for the kids and the price for that is more than it is to rent while we are there from what some of you have said here. Besides, the less I have to pack, the better!!

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't remember exact numbers, but it's not TOO expensive to rent snorkeling gear, however, it's pretty easy to just take your own. If you're going to be there for a week or so, you would probably save $100 bucks or so taking your own -and it doesn't take up much space in the suitcase (especially since you only need some swimsuits, sundresses, flip flops and a few shorts and t-shirts ;-)

Have fun! I'm jealous -and make sure you take the trip out to Molokini Crater -I went diving there, but there were a lot of snorkelers, and it's GORGEOUS -octopus, white tipped reef sharks, turtles, amazing fish -worth it!

It is not too expensive but we always bring our own. We scuba too so we bring a scuba bag with all our masks/fins/snorkels. I would recommend my favorite place to snorkel on Maui is Kapalua bay just before the ritz carlton Kapalua. I think it beat Fleming Beach for sea life and easy access.
We did scuba on Maui and I do not recommend it. For the price the sites you will see in Mexico or the caribean are much more spectacular.

I don't remember how much it cost, but I don't remember focusing on the cost, so it couldn;t have been that much. If you do a paid group excursion, it is probably included in the cost. We went on a boat that took us to Molokini Island and we did both diving and snorkeling, they even provided lunch because it was at least a 4 hour excursion, it was a lot of fun and sooooo beautiful. The coral was so close to the surface of the water and so many different species living there including HUGE sea turtles.
make sure you catch a sunrise on Mt. Haleakala - breathtaking! If you do decide to do that, make sure you pack something very warm to wear, it is amazingly cold on the top of the mountain!
I am so jealous, I wish I was going back!

Check with the place you are staying at for rentals. We went 3 years ago and the place we stayed at had snorkels for free and reasonable boat rentals. Also try looking online (type in snorkel rentals for the town you're staying in) to compare different shops.

Have fun!

:D Personally, if I had my own I'd bring them and use the money we saved on room service. Snorkels don't take up a lot of room. :D (but i really like room service) Even flippers can be laid out flat on the bottom of each person's case and not take up much space.

If I remember right, it was somewhere in the range of $7-8, but then you have to multiply that by the number of people and the number of days you are going to use it. Also, if you have your own, it will fit better and not leak, not a guarantee if you are renting. If you plan on snorkeling once or twice, you might want to rent, if you think you might be using it more often, bring your own.

Not sure where you are staying on Maui, but if you are on the Lanhaina side, not only is Kapalua Bay great, as previously mentioned, but Airport Beach is nice too. Easy access and great fish. Aloha!

We were JUST there last week! Here is what I know...

Don't bring it! There were three places on the boardwalk that I know of that rent. The one in the middle, furtherest away from Blackrock/Sheraton will rent it by the week if you are planning on going out more than twice. The Tribune (don't quote me but I think it was called that) is located just before the Sheraton. We picked this place as it has a shower right next to it to rinse off the feet and such. It was $8 for two hours and I don't even remember the price for the day. The last place to rent is the one right at the end where you go out and it is $8 for an hour.

We saw a sea turtle both times we went out there and lots of fish - we swam around the rock to the other side. Just be careful about how far you go out as there is a current that could get you. We started to follow this one turtle and didn't realize until it was almost too late!
