First of all, great question!! The insurance world is soooo confusing and I have had various issues with it over the years on group and individual insurances through my own business, which works under insurance and in group plans through my employer. This is my 4th child and we do not have maternity coverage on our individual insurance either. Yes, the Drs offices and hospitals have "packages" that are reduced rates for cash pay however for banner desert we are responsible for $7300 for just hospital stay/birth without complications and roughly $3300 with myOB which includes Dr visits, 2 ultrasounds, birth and post op care at 6 weeks. I spoke with my insurance yesterday, Humana, and these charges even paid out of pocket do NOT count towards meeting my deductible... Arghhhh... Very frustrating....my recommendations to you would be to look into individual maternity packages online, Cobra, and find out nitty gritty details about new insurance. Also, there are federal law changes going into effect through Obamacare in 2014 that impact pregnant women that may have influence on your decision. You can also seek out insurance broker for more advice.. Sooner than later make your decision as insurance is HELL and know that it will work out!
