Mastitis? - Raleigh,NC

Any experience with mastitis? I am wondering what might be causing an intense itching in one spot on one breast. It feels like an internal itch - not like something on the outer skin. I have been breastfeeding for 8 months now and this is my second baby I've nursed. He has started to nurse slightly less as he is getting older but still nurses a lot. I have no other symptoms. Thanks!

What can I do next?

I've had mastitis twice - pain, red hard, and warm swollen breast, fever - almost felt like I had the flu.
I would say intense itching is not mastits.
skin irritation maybe?

Well just itching doesn't sound like mastitis. I have had mastitis plenty of times and it's awful. You get a hard sore spot on your breast where milk is clogged, a fever, body aches, and when your baby nurses it will feel like razor blades slicing through your nipple. No joke it's that painful. So if you don't have this then it's probably something else. Take a trip to the doc and have him take a look.

I second that it is Yeast/Fungus. I have had both yeast and mastitis. Mastitis is fever-y, almost flu-like, redness (mine was a big red streak), and very very tender around the red area. Yeast is itchy, burning sometimes. Yeast can also cause shooting pain in the breast/back shoulder area if its really bad. : (

I agree with the other moms -- When I had mastitis it was very painful, red, swollen, and I ran a fever. I tried to drive myself to the doctor and couldn't because I was so light-headed from the fever. Is the itchy spot red or irritated looking? Have you tried cortizone cream or aloe on it? You could even try diaper cream to relieve the itch. If it lasts more than a day or 2, I'd at least call your doctor and see what she/he thinks.

I don't remember itching when I had mastitis. I remembered extreme pain and feeling a knot in my breast, and little milk coming out.

I had mastitis with my first and it was more painful and my breast was red, hard and swollen. I also had a high fever and could barely do anything until the antibiotics kicked in. Yours sounds like it could be a rash or yeast infection to me.

In my experience, it's usually more painful than itchy. I wonder if you don't have some kind of infection on your skin, like maybe even a yeast infection? I got one on my leg once when I was pregnant. I'd go into the Dr. to have it checked out.

Mastitis is an actual infection which will cause body aches, fever.chills and severe breast pain.

You may have the start of a clogged duct. Before you nurse the next time - try to take as hot a shower you can be comfortable with and massage both breasts, not necessary to express anything but to allow some circulation and movement of the ducts.

Congrats on still nursing!! I'm a child led weaning Mommy myself.
