Making Goat Milk Better?

I am in the SLOW process of trying to ween my son from breast milk. He has an allergy to cows milk, and it was suggested that I give him goats milk. The problem is that he won't drink it. I am using the powdered kind, and am mixing it with my breast milk, but he still spits it out. He doesn't mind when I mix it in his cereal, but won't take it out of a bottle. Has anyone had a similar experience? Is there any way to make the taste better? Will he ever drink it? I am really in need of some advice, because my milk is starting to dry up! Thanks!

What can I do next?

Well I heard most people who have kids don't like it they will mix it with formula or breast milk. At first I would do like 3/4 breat milk and slowly decrease it. Now I thought you can't give babies honey till like around 3 because of Rye Syndrome?? I may have that name wrong but ask your doctor about honey thing-it may be a year. Also my daughter wasn't weaned from breast till about 20 mos because she loved breast milk. He may not be ready to be weaned. She drank regular milk OK but there were times she refused it but given the choice she always wanted breast milk over everything at that age even food! I know that feeling of wanting to wean them but with her I did it slowly. She has been weaned for about 2 mos and I was not sure it would ever happened. Well good luck.

Powdered milk is pretty bad stuff. Try regular goats milk. Trader Joes has it and I think it tastes good. They also have goat cheeses and yogurt.

My son wouldn't drink anything but breast milk and water for the first year and a half. I never did push the milk thing with him. It seemed to me that if he should be drinking milk, it should probably be milk made for a human baby and not a calf. He still loves water and chocolate soy milk as a treat.

Good luck.

Does he take a bottle with pumped breast milk? If not maybe it is the bottle not the milk. If that is the case try the "breastbottle" (I think) or maybe a sippy cup at this point. If you think it is the milk, try mixing it as directed (with water?) or getting regular liquid milk and not mixing it with anything. Try different temps too.

I have heard that natural sweeteners (honey... sugar...) help. My son is also alergic to milk protein, I have been giving him soy formula and mixing it half and half with soy milk

I have a son who is now 4 that has a milk allergy. He has been drinking soy milk since he was weaned at 13 months. I just gave it to him in a cup at meals and snacks and together we dropped BFeedings. He likes it fine, so I didnt' ahve to worry about taste. There are other sources for calcium--soy yogurt, Ca fortified graham crackers, etc. You may want to check out some of the local grocery stores that carry more alternatives--like Henry's.

Good luck!!
