If it sounds too good to be true....... You get the gist.
It is a gimmick. I've heard the service is not reliable.
I have been researching the magic jack and would like to get your opinion. What are your positive or negative experiences with this product??

Don't waste your money on a Magic Jack. They are completely unreliable. I suggest you look into buying an Ooma. We have one and it is wonderful!
We have magic jack and have no problems with it at all. We have an old little lap top that we leave it plugged into. We needed a new router for a bit and had some problems Then we echoing back voice and drop calls. But since we got the new router we have had NO problems at all. We do both have cell phones for being out and about but we like the idea of having a home phone number.
I would never use such a product but those I know who did try it ran after a month. They said the phone actually worked about 20% of the time.
PROS:
cheap, can use a regular ol home phone, can use it/take it with you if you go out of town and keep your phone number
CONS:
have to have your computer on, poor sound quality when talking to someone who is on a cell phone, everyone already has your cell number so they don't call the home phone (magic jack)
We used it just the one year. My in-laws used it too. But they would call us from their MJ number and ask that we call them back on their home phone (they didn't have outbound long distance service). The sound quality was just too annoying for them.
I have never used the MJ BUT my Uncle has had it for about 2 yrs now & loves it..so..just sayin' my 2cents...;)
