Has anyone bought and used the Magic Jack for home telephone service. The commercials say $19.95 a year. I know u end up with a new phone number. But I am wanting to get away from payin $40/mo on home phone just to hear bill collectors calling me about people I dont know or selling me stuff. I still want a phone line tho just in case cell phone is lost, or not in service etc. Can you tell me the pro's and con's. Is it worth it? Does it work good? And how easy was it to purchase and install?

We've had it for over 2 years now. I would say it's worth it, especially if you primarily use your cell phone. It sure beats $40 a month for a landline! You do have to have it plugged in to your computer and your computer on to make and recieve calls, otherwise it will go to the message system. We mainly use it for backup but it has come in really handy when hubby wants to call Mexico, international calling is cheap and really easy to add to your account.

My husband has magic jack for his business line, and we gave magic jack to my dad for his home phone because he only had a cell, it doesn't work well in his house and I felt bad when it was cold and he would be sitting outside on his patio to talk to us. First, you do have to have a computer on for it to work, but you can let the computer go I to "sleep" mode and it will "wake up" if a call comes in. My husband hooked up a good quality cordless phone to his for work, and he has a handset in the office on his desk, a handset in the office on our business partner's desk, and a third handset in the shop. He has no problem making or receiving calls with the magic jack and 3 cordless phone set up in a commercial building. He also has the option to forward those calls to his cell if he is going to be out. My dad doesn't keep his computer on and in sleep mode, but the magic jack still gets voicemail for him when he doesn't have it turned on, so when he does turn the computer on he gets email that there are messages, and I believe a text interpretation of the voicemail if he doesn't have time to dial in and listen. Some things don't translate well, it depends in the message leaver's voice, enunciation etc. One thing that my husband finds convenient is that when we travel he can take the magic jack with us and anyplace that there is wifi - McDonalds, hotel, racetracks that we are working/racing at he can set up a laptop, hook up magic jack and make and receive calls like we are at home/work, we aren't being charged for calls at the hotel or using cell minutes....so for us it has been great. When you buy the unit for $39.95 it includes the first year of service, either online, by 800#, at Walmart, Walgreens, CVS etc...they are all the same. When you call to set up your phone number they will offer you an additional svc....if I remember correctly when I set up my dad's, it was something like for "29.95 for 3 additional years of svc" so I did it for my dad, not sure if my husband bought that for his office or not.

My landline is only 18 a month. The only reason I have that is to monitor my alarm.

I talked to one person who said it was awful. Then again they seemed like complete idiots so they may not have installed it correctly.

You may want to google VOIP systems that you can download before you commit to magic jack.

I got one when we dropped our land line because all of us had cell phones...I use it to talk to my mom who is 40 minutes away and is considered long distance and to talk to my sis who is in Oregon and would be long distance and to my best friend who is in Texas...it is not great, calls drop, sometimes it is hard to hear the other person...but if you are not using the phone for much anyway and it is not your primary means of getting in touch with someone or being got in touch with, then for the price it is worth it. So easy to purchase and install...I got mine at Best Buy and I am not good with electronics or anything like that and it was pretty much plug it into the right port and done.

My co-worker had it for a while, then disconnected it. She said that it was always down, people couldnt get through and half the time, she couldnt call out. The customer service was awful!

very easy to install. very easy to use. $40 for the first year (to buy the unit, for the service for 1 year). I did not sign up for the second year, but I assume $19.95 like advertised.

CONS: You must have your computer on in order to recieve or make calls.
It does not get great reception when the other person you're talking to is on a cell phone. (I dont know about land lines. I think they're fine.) Short story: We stopped using Magic Jack when we got 'unlimited minutes' on our cell phone plan. But my MIL and FIL got Magic Jack. MIL would call me on my cell and say "Can you call me back on our home phone? This Magic Jack reception it's hard to hear you well." (She had a landline, and Magic Jack. But her landline couldn't do out-going long distance).

Anyways - I say stick with the $40 a month home phone and spend the $20 you would've spent on Magic Jack for caller ID
