Hi H.,

L-Lysine will prevent them but if he gets them a lot then his immune system is not working at it's best. That can cause other problems as well and you should see this as a red flag. He needs to be on an absorbable multivitamin/mineral complex daily. The vitamin will help a lot and I would recommend keeping L-Lysine in the cupboard in case a canker sore starts to appear. If he gets them often then he probably can feel one coming on before it gets full blown. I would also recommend an L-Lysine supplement that has the B vitamin in it. That will help it absorb better and he won't have to take as much. L-Lysine has few side effects, none if only taken when needed.

Dodge places like Walmart or GNC when shopping for it. Get it from a pharmaceutical health store.

Regards,

M.

My son (now 11) has been taking Lysine as needed for canker sores since he was 9. I would cut the tablet in half and only give him half each day until gone. He usually needed it for just one day, but sometimes two. We've only had to use Lysine like 4 times in two years.

We use Abreva or Lysine lip gels. They are applied topically, so it's easy and relatively mess free.

Not sure about the Lysine dosage, but I used to get canker sores really badly until I started using toothpaste without Sodium Lauryl Sulfate in it and rinsing with hydrogen peroxide after brushing or more often if there is a break out. Helps them go away faster.
Best wishes for your daughter!

I used to get them really bad as well until I switched to using Arm & Hammer Toothpaste.

Lysine totally works. They say to just take one once a day for an adult so for a child maybe everyother day. Also canker sores can be brought on if she eats a lot of citric foods. Or sour candy or lots of salty foods. So watch what she eats.

My teenager and I both suffer from cronic canker sores in the mouth. The best remedy is peroxide. We just dab the canker sore with a q-tip dipped in hydrogen peroxide after brushing our teeth at night. The sore usually clears up after 2 or 3 nights. When she was younger we used a product called Gly-Oxide because she said peroxide burned. That worked really well also. (It does tingle and feel funny.)
