Lymphnodes on Back of Head

I noticed a little bump on the back of my son's head (smaller than a pea and it moves around) a few weeks back and brought it up at our last Ped. visit. The Dr. said that it is a lymphnode, totally normal and will go away on its own.
Has anybody heard of these? I couldn't find much info online......(and as a first time mom I won't accept "totally normal" as an answer. tee hee )

What can I do next?

My son had them behind his ears on both sides of his head. They too moved around and my doctor said that it is good they move around. He said they may seem more visable when he is sick or fighting something off. My son will be 2 on Friday and I don't really notice them anymore. Maybe it has something to do with him not being sick much in the summer. Hope this helps!

My son had the same thing and it seems to enlarge when he is very sick with a virus. They said he is prone to having it happen again. It scares me though, but they said it's ok. If it doesn't go down I would get a second opinion.

Yes, normal! All three of my kids had them. My oldest son had them behind his ears forever. They eventually go away. Try not to worry!

Lymphnodes do clog. God bless doctor ingorance about lymphnodes. This may mean that your child has lymphedema. I do not know where you live but it would be wise to find someone who specializes in child lymph massage. The back of his head and neck should be opened up with massage so the lymphnode can drain.

Regular doctors do not know much about lymphedema or lymphnodes. It can be scarey but you can learn to drain it for you son when it happens. Watch for other face, neck, shoulder swelling. The head nodes drain from the back of the neck. It could cause him to have trouble hearing or headaches.

Do not get depressed and feel that life is over. This is very manageable. It is not your fault. Sometimes it is infection or an injury. I was born with the problem but I was in my thirties when it became unmanagible.

Hi, A.. Lymph nodes are normal. We all have them. That's how our toxins travel through our body and get filtered. You can generally find them around joints and in breast tissue, but they are everywhere. If you're questioning your doctor's opinion, though, as to whether it's normal to have them in the back of the head, you can always go to another doctor and ask. Good luck!

My son also has one and the Dr always looks at it on his well visits, but indicates that it is nothing to worry about. My son is 2 yrs old and has had it since 3 or 4 months old. My mom indicated that my brother also had one until he was about 15. My Dr indicated that they flair up if your child gets sick and sometimes they stick around. My son never got sick before his showed up but who knows. I have noticed that when he does get sick more of them swell up on the back of his neck. From what I have heard from everyone it is nothing to worry about.

My daughter had a little one at the back of her neck when she was around 8 months, I like you was worried. Her ped. said that it was normal and that it would eventually go away on its own. she said to keep an eye on it and to let her know if it got bigger. I watched it for a while with no change. After reading your post I thought to check on it....and it is gone.

I totally understand the first time M. worries, so I won't tell you not to worry...just know that is is normal and will be fine :)

My daughter has had swollen lymph nodes in the past. What I have learned is that they are often swollen due to an infection. Our ped put her on antibiotics to be on the safe side. The general "rule" is that if they are swollen and not sore, it is likely something "simple" like an infection. If the lymph nodes are swollen and painful, then you should be concerned and get further diagnostics done. Hope this helps!

My husband has the same thing on the back of his next and has since he was a kid. The Dr. has always told him that it was no cause for alarm if it stayed around the same size.

I have a 10 month old little guy too. And he had the same thing and we got the same response. I know that our ped told me what it is caused from but I don't remember what she told us.

He has had them twice now and they've gone away on their own both times. As strange as it is, yep . . .they are normal.

We all have lymphnodes! They are part of our bodies, and the are in specific places, like next to your ear. etc. that get a little swollen when things are off, or we are not well.

My son is 3 and he has them, and I have asked to Doctor about them serveral times, and they are normal, a little scary ( i thought cancer). But my doctor told us that it's all normal, just watch them so that they don't grow. My sons have not grown. So don't worry, I already did.

Hi A.,

In June my daughter took a camping trip with my in-laws. When she arrived home my mother-in-law said my daughter had been bitten on the top of the head twice by some kind of insect. She didn't see the bites take place, just noticed them when giving her a bath. Two days later I noticed a lump behind her right ear. I took her to the Ped. The doc asked if she had been in any wooded areas and if she had been bitten by an insect. I showed the bug bites to her. She was mostly concered about them being tick bites. They were not. The doc said that when bites occur on the skull the lymphnodes...the one behind my daughter's ear in this case... swell up to fight off the infection or foreign body. The doc also said that it could be 3 weeks before the swollen lymphnode goes down. We put neosporen on the bug bites and they were gone in few days, but the lymphnode didn't return to normal size until about 3 weeks. Hope that helps.

My daughter had the same thing in the back of her head. She had been ill, and my ped told us that is was just a way for the body to store antibodies to fight an infection. The doctor put her on some antibiodics and the bumps went away after may be a week or so.
