I am looking for great mini-field trips for my kids this summer. Earlier this week we went to the National Zoo! I am off next Friday and was going to do a boat tour of the National Monuments with one of my friends, but she can't go now. So I was looking at the discount tickets offered through our local MWR on base, and they have great priced tickets to Luray Caverns. It's about a 3 hour drive for me, and I'l probably take my husband's Prius and have him take an SUV to DC (2 hour drive). But I'm wondering if it's really amazing? I lived in Bermuda when I was younger and they had the caves and caversn and we could even swim in them! I LOVED it. I think this would be something fun and new for us to do. Looking for any advice on it. We would do it in one day, so a LONG day...but I think worth it, especially with the long weekend afterwards :).

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I took the kids today and thank God my brother and his girlfriend came with us!! It was a lot of fun, but I was so thankful for the help! And it took 3.5 hours each way! MY goodness...but totally worth it for something new for the kids :)

ONE LONG DAY!! It's so fun! My girls were 4 and 6 when they went... they were totally into it! They want to go back soon. The baby was a pain, but he's always a pain ;) The caverns take your breath away. You wear headsets that tell stories of the formations as you go. I let the kids take their own pictures. There's also the car museum, the wax museum, a maze, and some other museum where you can get in this little water stream and find your own gems!! SUPER COOL!! Pack a lunch, and don't forget to taste their homemade fudge :) OH, and wear sunscreen for outside walking around, but bring a light hoodie or sweater for the caverns, it's a little chilly in there :) HAVE FUN!! OH, see now I want to go again :)

I agree. A 6 hour ride for just the caverns I might not do. They are cool, but not the "you can swim here" type cool. There is also a car museum and a garden maze, if I remember correctly. I'd combine it with another trip.

Luray Caverns are nice, but I agree, as a main attraction, it probably is not worth it. They have the stalactite piano which is pretty cool.
I stayed in Luray at this beautiful Bed & Breakfast (can't remember the name of it - Maybe Woodruff? but it was in a nice Victorian house) - the owners served up gourmet meals for breakfast and dinner. I would go back there in a heartbeat. Maybe save the caverns for a special weekend for you and hubby and go to the bed & breakfast there!

IMHO, I would not drive 3 hours just to go to the caverns. To me it is not worth the 6 hour round trip car ride. I've been to Luray Caverns on my way from PA to NC and it is ok as a side attraction but not the main destination. They caverns are ok but there is no swimming Basically, you take an elevator down into the cavern then walk around and come back up the elevator. I have not been to Bermuda but I can not imagine that Luray Caverns are anything like the ones in Bermuda.

You may also want to look at their website. Luraycaverns.com befor you go.

That is a long drive if you're not staying overnight. We did a road trip in April that included 2 nights in that area. We stayed on a beautiful horse ranch in Stanley (river's bend ranch). Reasonable and on a magnificent piece of property. We loved Luray caverns - and we fancy ourselves cave lovers. I've toured caves in Puerto Rico and all up and down the East Coast. What we loved about Luray was that there were so many different formations - and some of them were just enormous. The organ that uses the stalagtites (sp?) to make the notes is really interesting. It's not the deepest cave I've ever been in and it seemed much warmer than every other I've seen, but it was well worth seeing. The weather didn't cooperate, so we didn't see much of the quaint town of Luray. The storms were so bad the couple of days we were there, my daughter didn't get to do any horseback riding. I would love to go back
