Hey ladies! I think this coming Friday we are going to take our kids (ages 6 and 5 years old, and 8 months old) to Luray caverns. It's about a 2 1/2 hour trip... I'm not worried about the kids in the car, but my BF is the BIGGEST whiner on long car rides, LOL... anyway, I know they allow strollers, so I'm not worried about that either... is this going to be worth a 5 hour round trip? I've been once before with MY family when I was a kid... I'm just hoping we'll be able to make an entire day out of it. Any advice, suggestions, and story sharing is greatly appreciated! THANKS! :)

So What Happened?

To everyone mentioning strollers, it says in the FAQs right on their official website 'small strollers are accepted' and then notifies you that there are 3 small sets of stairs where the stroller will have to be carried. I'm okay with that ;)

Luray is a great trip. I don't remember strollers in the caverns themselves (I remember lots of stairs).
Another great trip we did a few times was Cass, WV. It was about a 5 hr drive from northern Va one way (I think we spent 1 overnight at a ski lodge nearby, but in the summer the place is fairly empty).
We'd take a lunch and take the steam engine train ride up the mountain, have lunch at the top, then ride the train down again (they have a real nice switch back). My son LOVES the train!

On our way back we stopped at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory at Green Bank, WV. The telescope is HUGE!

Harper's Ferry is a nice day trip, too.
Have fun!

You cannot take a stroller into the caverns. The entrance/exit steps are steep.
You will need a light jacket.
The tour of the caverns takes about an hour.

There are several other activities around, so you can definitely make a day of it.

I got married at the Mimslyn Hotel, 1 mile from the caverns (husband's family from Luray). It's beautiful!! Anyhow, if it's still hot enough, you can get day passes to the Yellowstone campground and do minigolf and water slides. But keep in mind, it's usually about 10 degrees cooler there than here (and MUCH cooler in the caverns).

Yes! And I don't think you get to take your own strollers. If I remember correctly, they had some (along with wheelchairs) provided at the bottom of the stairs. I think the reasoning behind that is they don't want anyone falling down the stairs while carrying something.

I've been there recently and thought it was great. It can be very worth it. But I guess that's kind of up to each person's attitude. If you go, hope you have a great time. It is a marvel!
