Lumps on My Daughter's Head

Hey, I need opinions...I noticed yesterday that my 2.5 year old daughter has two small lumps on her head near where her skull meets the neck. They are not red or irritated in any way. They don't bother her but I think it's weird. They remind me of lymph nodes being swollen but I couldn't find anything on the internet that said where all the body's lymp nodes were. We do have a Dr appointment already scheduled for next week for her asthma but should I take her in sooner?? Has anyone seen this before? Thanks, D.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hello All,

Thank you all so much for all the advice. I am sorry it has taken me so long to write with an update.....Turns out she must have been fighting a virus because after tons of bloodwork her lymph nodes went away and the bloodwork all came back normal. During all this we discovered she has asthma. But that had nothing to do with the lymph nodes.

Again, thank you all for giving me such good advice. D.

My son who is now 17 months old has two small lumps/knots about the size of a small marble on both sides of his head down near his neck. They are in the same place on both sides of his neck/head. I had the doctor look at them several months ago and he said it was nothing to be concerned about at all. Does this sound anything like what you are talking about?

My son has the same thing and his doctor said it's just his lymph nodes. I freaked out when I felt them there but the doctor said that it was nothing to worry about. Since you already have an appointment scheduled for next week I would just wait until then to ask the doctor about it. But, if it's going to worry you until then maybe you should just call your doctor's office and ask what they think.

I think there are some lymph nodes in that area...I've had swelling there before too. But if you're concerned about it, take her to the doctor. It doesn't hurt to be overly cautious.

You are correct about lymphnodes in this area. It sounds like my son has similar lumps. I noticed them right after his 6 month well baby visit. He has his 9 month well baby on Monday and I plan to ask the doc about them. You can email me after Monday at ____@____.com if you want to know what he says. I'd be interested to hear your doctors take on it too.

I had a problem with lumps in that same area on my son's head and asked the doctor about them a couple of times to be sure they weren't a problem. Every time I asked he assured me it was normal, but he never said it was lymph nodes. As I understood it, it is a natural occurence. I hope that is the case with your daughter. Try not to worry, although remembering back, I did freak out a bit when I first felt them on my son :). But definitely ask her doctor about it to be sure.

Earlier this year my 4YO daughter had a lump on her neck. Apparently when the body is fighting off bugs it sets the lymph system into action and that can inflame the lymph nodes. So it could just be that she is fighting off a cold or some other bug. Because my daughter had a lot of ear infections during the winter (which is rather unusual for 4) my doctor was concerned that there was something else going on- she was tested for leukemia/lymphoma. Apparently lymph nodes also get enlarged when they're fighting any bug off, including cancer. I would say if she has any other wierd symptoms you might want to take her in sooner- like super tired or odd headaches. Around the same time I also found out that lymph nodes can get infected, which just take some antibiotics to take care of- you'd know that because they would be very sensitive to touch.

As it stands for my daughter, the test results came back just fine. :) I'm sure it probably isn't so much a big deal unless there are other symptoms... I just didn't want you to wait until the asthma appointment if there's something else going on. Just the same you might want to call your doctor, depending on how severe her asthma is it may be better to get her on antibiotics... but I really don't know anything about asthma.

If it were me, I would take her asap. Just because it is so bizzar, and although it't not pleasant to think about, I know what is running though your mind and the sooner you find out what it is the better.
