I am new to the Toledo area, but I just found a Fresh Market on Central & Secor. They have a lot of whole grain & organic foods. That might be a good place to look.

I have been making baby food for my 12 1/2 month old son since he was 6 months old. He had a food intolerance to grains and we are just now getting him started on them. When I use frozen or canned produce I always buy it with no salt and sugar added. I am looking for the same in grain products and am not having any luck. Maybe I am looking in all the wrong places, but I can't even find unsalted crackers! Everything I looked at had incredibly large amounts of sodium! Whole Foods is too far away from me, so I'm looking for products I can find at biggs, kroger or meijer. I am also looking for ideas on meats (all natural) for this age group. He does really well with finger foods and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I was going to suggest Whole Foods but I see that you don't live near one. What about Trader Joe's (Jim's)?? You could always take a day to go wherever you can find the best stuff and really stock up on what you need. Kroger's has some organic meats, produce, and even crackers and such. Good luck! Sounds like you really care about what your child eats, as you should! :)

I am pretty sure Krogers sells organic and low sodium products in their organic section. Also here is a low sodium shopping list that might be helpful.

I would check with your doctor, but if you are doing produce low sodium, and not adding much if any to your cooking and using other spices in their place, the sodium in grains is probably not a big deal. I have a friend who is a dietician and she doesn't worry about it. Sodium is a requirement by our bodies, obviously not the massive amounts most adults take in, but I recall reading that it is not recommneded to put infants on "low-sodium" diets in general, barring a medical condition. They did used to make salt-free saltines (kind of an oxymoron...), and I think Triscuit and Nabisco make lower sodium crackers, but really, I don't think you should stress over it - the bigger sources of sodium are boxed foods (hamburger helper, etc)

I have been able to find unsalted top saltine crackers at Wal-Mart. I have noticed that many of their canned veggies have a reduced/low sodium option as well. I am 30 weeks pregnant, so I try to watch my sodium intake.
Kroger has a no-salt cracker. It is their own brand. Have you tried any of the health food stores? I know this sounds strange but I get some of my grains, flours, etc., from the Amish. They don't usually add a lot of extra ingredients and can tell you exactly what is in the product. I know you can go online to see what stores carry their products. I don't know where you live but Amish Acres is here in Indiana.
Try usalted tops. It cuts down the salt. There is also truely is not a salt free diet. Pork products have sodium in it by nature. Salt is used to keep things from turning bad. Sometimes rinsing will remove most of the salt or sugar. I rinse beef when I brown it to remove fat. I rinse in hot water. I also rinse or buy fruit in light juice to remove most of the sugar. The only sure way to have no salt is to fix it yourself not always possible in this day and time.
