Low Fat Milk Going Bad

Hi moms - the past couple of months i have been purchasing 1% milk and low fat cottage cheese for myself ( i'm still buying regular fat cottage cheese and 2% milk for the rest of the family). I have had the worst luck with the low -fat products spoiling well before their expiration date (up to a week before). I even switched brands to see if that would help - nope! They never get left out on the counter and i even turned my fridge down to 34 degrees. The higher fat products don't have this problem. i was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this? Thank you!

What can I do next?

Buy ORGANIC MILK.

Organic has a much longer expiration period than regular milk.
It's a little complicated why but you can google the question. It has to do with how the milk is processed.

Plus, if you do a little research, you may never let you or your family drink regular milk again. The amount of hormones/chemicals that we ingest are alarming esp. for growing children.

Organic does cost more and I don't buy everything organic ($$$) but for my small kids and the fact that we drink milk every day, it is worth it.
If cost is really an issue, buy it at WalMart. I never grocery shop there but they have the cheapest prices on organic milk.

I would wonder if maybe your store isn't handling their cold dairy properly? Like maybe the dairy distributor doesn't keep it as cold as they are supposed to. You could try getting just your dairy from another store and see if that make a difference.

If you buy organic, it lasts MUCH longer. When I buy a half gallon container, it lasts 6-8 weeks. Right now I have some in our fridge that doesn't expire until well into April.

What I noticed is when I purchase 1% from Costco, I have to buy a gallon and a half and the expiration date is way beyond anything else I ever buy. I never have a problem with spoilage. I do however make everyone drink that when I buy it. We just switch back and forth. But what stands out is the ex-date is so far out.

Start buying organic milk. It lasts forever (more expensive, but obviously less waste). It's the O. single thing you can do that has the biggest impact on the planet, too. Win/win.

I've heard that lower fat dairy products do tend to spoil faster. Try storing your milk and dairy products at the back of your refrigerator where it's coldest. When we did that, we saw a much lower incidence of spoilage. Also, absolutely switch to organic, and not just for freshness reasons.

now that my kids are 3, 5, and 9, i buy 1% for all of us since they drink so much. i've never had that problem because with all of us drinking it, we go through so much. i'd just buy less for now until maybe more people in the family are drinking it. never tried the orgnanic. back of fridge sounds like a good idea!
