this winter weather has left my kids with chapped cheeks...I normally use lubriderm which is a great lotion,, but they complain that it hurts... and I tried it on some chapped skin and yes indeed it does sting.
does anyone have a recommendation for a lotion that wont sting these little cheeks..?
I haven't found anything better than chapstick! Works wonders ... and I agree ... the blue one is the best! Particularly great under the nose when they have a cold to stop cracking and redness ... but great on cheeks!! I use it both on my 5 year old and my 10 month old (she is teething).

Like many others said, Baby Aquaphor by Eucerin. Let it soak in a few minutes and 'seal' it with plain Chapstick (black tube) and it won't come off on stuff.

Our pediatrician recommended Aquaphor a few years back, and this is what we've always used. It's a bit greasy upon application, but it definitely does the trick! My hubby even puts it under his nose when he has a cold to help with the red and chapping. They make an Aquaphor for Kids, but I think it's the same as the regular Aquaphor as well.

I sincerely want to thank everyone who suggested Auquaphor. I literally signed up for a mamapedia account just to say thank you.
I have developed severely cracked skin over large sections of my torso. It is in so much pain from the stinging of other lotions, so I took your advice on Aquaphor. You’re right that it’s a bit greasy, but it doesn’t hurt so excruciatingly bad like other lotions. I’m so thankful for your advice!

good quality olive oil works great. We put it on at the end of the bath or shower because the water spreads it really well. I was thinking of putting some natural scented oil in to change the smell but I haven't done that yet. /good luck

lisa; hey good ole vasoline can help, and if you put it on before they go outside, it prevents that wind burn too, there are no chemicals and smelly good stuff in vasoline, its what most lotions are made from, just they add stuff, jar of vasoline can be very cheap, and last forever, however a small amount goes a long way, so dont use it like you would lotions, just a little, and try to put it on before going out it creates a barrier, so just a little, have fun hope it helps, , i am sensative to lotions too, and little hands are sensative and cheeks are too when chapped even more so, D. s

Our dermatologist recommended Vanicream for daughter's (21 months) eczema. It's a really thick lotion free of just about everything irritating.
Also, we use Aquaphor on their faces/hands when they get really chapped. It's a little greasy, but it's so mild, they don't complain.
I know a lot of the Neutrogena products have also been recommended by physicians in the past.

hey lisa,
vaseline is a great option. however, it doesn't moisturize as much as block the elements. i am NOT an arbonne distributor but i have used their baby/toddler line of bath wash, lotion and sunscreen on my sensitive boy's skin for many years now with excellent results. it can seem expensive but it is true that a little goes a very long way. my distributor is currently out of state. i would go to the website and see if you can find some one local. this is NOT an endorsement of any specific person's business just a testimonial to the product line itself. :-)!!!

Arbonne has a great ABC Body Lotion that is awesome on kids skin. I would also recommend the ABC Wash. They are $14 each. Arbonne is a Swiss formulated line of products that are herbally & botanically based. They contain no irritating artificial dies or fragrances and no petrochemical products (such as mineral oil & petroleum). If you are interested, give me a call at ###-###-#### or email me and I can send you samples. Arbonne comes with a $$$ back guarantee - if you are not happy we will refund your $$$. Good luck.

Try using Olive oil~ especially after just washing as it soaks in best that way. No stinging and it is a very natural barrier. Many lotions with mineral oils/ Lanolin will only dry the skin more. (and too many lotions contain it.).
*I've done a lot of study on this as I have a strong sensitivity to many ingredients in lotions, as does my son. If you are really ambitious, you can find many at home recipes in beauty care books that beat many store-bought items hands-down and still cost less to make! I do this and it works very, very well~
The best thing about using Olive Oil is it is most likely in your kitchen, so there is no extra cost; it is just as effective to help prevent chapped skin/lips when kids (and adults) go out into the cold and there are many other uses for it other than to cook with. Especially if you use 'cold pressed' as we do.

Hey Lisa,
I had the same problem with my girls. Especially my youngest. She has very sensitive skin and so she says pretty much every lotion is...as she puts it, "spicy." Then I discovered the creamy version of petrolium jelly. Vaseline makes a version but I always get store brand if it's available. It's WONDERFUL! No more "it's spicy" moments =)I especially love it because it rubs in instead of ON like regular vaseline.
It is thicker than a normal lotion so it takes a bit longer to rub in, but it doesn't sting and works wonders. I use it on myself as well. I get this horrible rash on my hands every winter and that is the best lotion I have found for it because it doesn't burn, and it works well. I do use the rosebud salve on occassion but prefer to use that one for small areas because it costs more.
Good luck!

Aquaphor, Aquaphor, Aquaphor, it's the only thing that works on my kids. As I am sure you know, there are a lot of lotions that say,"all natural" but still have items in them that can bother sensitive skin. Aquaphor is the only thing that works without all the "fancy" stuff inside the product. The only draw back is that it is greasy, so perhaps you will want to put it on at night (might get on the pillow case) or at dinner when they are not touching their face or if they get a special treat and watch a movie - something like that.

Hi Lisa,
My kid is 7 and has the same issue. I use Arbonne Skin Conditioning oil. It's not cheap (I forget how much) and it's a small bottle, but literally one drop for each cheek is enough. I only do it an night and it really does the trick. Usually after 2 nights, it's all gone. I also put a couple of drops on my knuckles before bed (it would be too greasy to put on during the day) and I wake up to the softest hands. I originally started using it because I have the worst elbows. I've literally tried everything to make them look and feel better and this is the best that I've tried. I even tried some surgeon cream from QVC and just about everything from the drugstore. I am NOT an Arbonne rep! I just love their products.

We have used a product for years called Corn Huskers lotion. It is very runny (I think because it has a lot of glycerin in it), and fairly clear, but a little goes a long way. It also has a really nice smell.
It isn't a new product it has been around for since I was a kid. I usually get it right at Wal-mart. I especially like it when my hands are so dry that they start cracking, because everything else I try to use at that point will sting, except for Corn Huskers.

When my kids' skin gets that chapped (usually it is their hands or lips/face in the wintertime :-) We use regular Vaseline or BagBalm. (BagBalm was originally used to keep cow udders healthy in Vermont. But it has A LOT of lanolin in it and it is great.) You can find it at WalMart, Meijers.
Good Luck!

Try Neutrogena Hand Cream. It comes in a small tube because you don't need much. It has a "Vaseline" quality that coats and protects skin. I use it on dry, cracked, winter hands and it doesn't sting. You can get it at any drug store, or they sell a 3-pack at Costco that is way cheaper. (I can't remember the exact price but it was between $5-$10 for the 3-pack).
Good luck.

I use good ole' chapstick. Each kid has their own tube...just get the nonscented kind. Any time they go outside, I put it on their lips, cheeks and tip of nose. When they come in, I do the same thing. So far this year, we have avoided chapped cheeks. I started doing this at the end of last year and it worked really well. My daughter, who is almost 4 loves to put it on herself too:)
As far as lotions, ecurin (sp?) is really good, it is costly, but worth it if they are really bad.
Oh and if their cheeks are really bad already, I do the chapstick at night before bed too:)

Hi Lisa,
My suggestion would be to use cocoa butter in a stick or a more natural product like Shaklee Hand and Body Lotion. If you look at the back of the Lubriderm, it contains some petroleum by-products and nasty chemicals- no wonder it stings! I was a dental hygienist for 31 years and we had to wean people off of Chapstick for these reasons- the petroleum by-products (mineral oil, etc.)keep the skin/lips irritated and they never heal. We told people to get a stick of cocoa butter at the pharmacy and their chapped lip problem was solved! Shaklee makes awesome products- all from Nature and safe for kids- green cleaners, safe skin care and make up and great vitamins- all made in the USA, no lead or contaminants. Contact me for more info.
Good luck,
M.

Hi Lisa,
I swear up and down about Eucerin Original Moisturizing Creme or you can do the Lotion. It's not cheap by any means BUT it doesn't take but a little bit so it last for a loooong time.
The Creme is thick and it really stays on the skin. My daughter has REALLY bad skin in the winter and if I'm consistant with applying it at least twice a day it's a remarkable change to her skin.
I use the Creme myself on my legs daily and seriously it's like I have teen age skin again. (I'm 36 years old going on 37 next month.) Best of luck!
