DD1 (20 months old) lost her favorite stuffed animal in the store today. I shouldn't have let her take it inside. We usually don't. So lesson learned I guess. But this was her lovey. She has other stuffed animals that she likes. But this was her favorite. Daddy bought it for her almost a year ago. She always slept with it and took it in the car. So what should I do now? They don't sell that stuffed animal anymore. Maybe she would pick a different lovey... ? Any suggestions? (Momma feels AWFUL for this whole situation, BTW!)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Yes, I checked the store. It wasn't there :-( And the company doesn't sell that particular one anymore. So we took her to the store and stood in the stuffed animal aisle until she picked one out. She now has a cow we named Moo (she can't say cow yet). She hasn't mentioned Kitty (the one she lost) in a couple of days now. I think this has all been harder on Mommy and Daddy than her, lol! Thanks everyone for the support and suggestions. It has made me feel better knowing I'm not a "terrible Mommy". :)

First I would totally call too and ask if they found it.

If not, then take her to pick out a new one of her choice.

I completely feel for you. My daughter is 15 and still takes her little bear overnight everywhere she goes. She got it for Valentine's Day when she was 3.

Good Luck!

:)

Please update us -- did you or the store find the lovey? I hope you checked with the store and also returned to retrace your footsteps as suggested. Also check in the store parking lot; it might have been dropped there and gotten knocked over to one side or something like that.

Maybe check online to see if you can find that toy, but it may only be doable if you know the maker's name--?

Kids do tend to pick their own loveys as an emotional thing, rather than just finding a new toy at a store and declaring it a lovey. If you get lucky and she does find a new lovey in a store, buy two identical ones. My sister-in-law did that for years with the tiny blankets my niece loved to cuddle -- bought heaps of them at once and saved them so when one got ragged it miraculously became whole again....

For next time -- My daughter's loveys get "collars" with a statement typed on them with their name plus: "I belong to a little girl who loves me very much. If I am lost please help me find my family." Then phone numbers to reach us. We do this when we travel with the loveys. It gives her and me some peace of mind (because her loveys are beloved by me too!). If you do this be sure to cover the paper of the typed part with heavy clear packing tape so it lasts. My daughter has about nine toys that qualify as loveys but fortunately says we only have to travel with, um, four....! (She's 11 and STILL very attached to her loveys!)

I would definitely call the store and fine out if it was turned in or found. Many stores have personel who recognize a loved possession that is lost by a toddler and will be sure it is put in a safe place until someone claims it. We left a lovey at a hotel once, I didn't realize until HOURS later when we were on the way home. I called the next morning and believe it or not, housekeeping found the blanket and sent it by federal express. I will forever be loyal to SHERATON Hotels because they cared enough to look for our very worn out and overly loved blanket to locate it for us and send it (at our expense). Please call and ask whether someone turned your lovey in, and I will be thinking about you and your little one tonight.

Can't remember which but one of my girls lost her favorite stuffed animal. I didn't really do anything and she picked a new one. Granted both my daughters have a crazy amount of stuffed animals so maybe the variety made it easy to switch.

I would go back to the store and ask if anyone turned in a stuffed animal. I would go look on the internet if no one turned it in. I know my son would flip out if he ever lost his blue mister bear.

My oldest child (just turned 6) lost her blankie at the Children's museum a few months ago. We NEVER take it places. But she had slept at grandma's house, and my mom and I were meeting at the museum as a half way point and when she got out of my mom's car she wanted to bring it into the museum with her. Well of course I called the museum and asked about it. Then went back the next day and searched, and it was a goner (I'm sure someone threw it out thinking it was a rag!) Well she sobbed for days and I took her to the mall on the weekend. We checked 6 stores (Target, Walmart, Babies R Us, finally found one in Buy Buy Baby that was similar) and we bought one that was close.

She uses that one now for sleeping and she tries her best to not miss her old blankie. She is no longer super upset about it but she tells me about how she "prayed to Santa" for her old blankie and that she is sure he will get her the same EXACT ONE for Christmas. She tells me about how at Show and Tell they were to bring in their most favorite toy - and she brought blankie (sniff) and when we were sitting and looking at old baby pictures of herself she said it made her sad because she saw old blankie there!!

OMG!!! Be glad your daughter is only 20 months! The big girl dramatic theater is TOO MUCH! You can get one pretty similar to replace it and she should be good to go!

Uh uh...so sorry M., DD must be feeling a bit angry.. :(
Call the store, definitely. Hopefully, some good person found it, and the store has kept it!
If it turns out to not be the case, get DD to pick up a small new replacement (don't tell her it is a replacement, though!!). Do a big naming ceremony, feed the new soft toy her food and place them both together while doing the night time story.
Perhaps, she'll take to the new one smoothly!

First, did you go back to the store and retrace your steps? Ask customer service if it was turned in to lost & found?? I'd recommend going back to the store in person and asking if it was turned in. I lost a wallet once and called, they said they didn't have it, but when I spoke to someone in person they actually looked for me and they did have it.

I guess it depends on how attached she is to it. My son would have had a hard time sleeping without his "guy" so I would have had to find another one. If she will take something else as replacement, then I'd go with that.

Otherwise, get on the internet and start looking. Do you remember the brand as a starting point? I almost bought my son a second "guy" b/c I was afraid this would happen. I did find a duplicate on EBay (at $30, original price of $12!). Didn't buy it b/c of that, but luckily we never needed it.

I think it's normal for kids to have attachments to these things, and as a parent I would always go above and beyond to get them replaced, if possible and reasonable. My daughters favorite thing got thrown up on, then replaced (it was mechanical), then there was an unfortunate night time accident and it needed to get replaced again. Luckily, it was readily available at ToysRUs and not expensive :)

Good luck!

Because she has only had it for a year, that means she can choose another lovey. There really isn't anything else she can do...

You might offer her a small blanket - that's easy to put in the car and sleep with.

So sorry - my niece did that at MacDonalds, but they drove back at 11:00 pm and it was still there.

My son from 6 months old, has had the same lovey.
BUT, when he was still a baby, I got him 2 others, as a back-up in case we lost it.
I found his back-up loveys, on E- bay. And yes, this was MUCH later, like a year later... that I found it, on E-bay.
The original stuffed toy lovey, was from Gymboree.
So I did a search online, and found it. Brand new, on E-bay.
You could try that. Search E-bay.

But sure, my son has other stuffed animals too.... but his LOVEY, is only this particular stuffed cow... that he just adores. He is 5 now... but he still calls it his "best friend" and loves it dearly.
And still sleeps with it.

His lovey, once fell out of our car.... we realized it as we drove home... we went back to where we were parked, and FORTUNATELY, it was still there, in the parking lot, at the stall we were parked in. Talk about PANIC... until we found it again.

So, I REALLY understand how you feel....

Oh and by the way, when my son got older, he found the other 2 back-up loveys I had... of that same cow he has. He asks me "Mommy! I found 2 more cows!" So I explained that I got those for him when he was still a baby... just in case we lost his original one. So then, he ALSO put the other 2 back-up cow loveys, in his bed too. But he ONLY LOVES, his original stuffed cow lovey... that he has had since he was 6 months old. It is still.... surviving and through all the times I put it in the washer. He will even tell me "Mommy, cow needs to be washed.... "
So cute.

Is there any way to check on eBay? I ask because my oldest daughter had this stuffed animal that turned out to have been from France (of course THAT's the one she loves...). Anyway, the company still made similar ones but not that exact one. So I went on eBay and searched - sure enough, someone had a "gently used" one for sale, and I snapped it up. When we received it, I washed it and then gave it to my daughter. She was thrilled. Just a thought, in case the store can't find yours... So sorry your little one lost her lovey! So traumatic for all involved! :(

I lost my DD's lovey on an airplane. :( I was sooo sad, because it's one that her Daddy bought on the day she was born, and it spent every night of her life with her.

They had discontinued it, so we couldn't replace... I had called the airline looking for it, but it was gone. When we went to fly back home, one of the staff had bought a similar toy, hoping to replace it. She liked it, but it never became that special to her. She looked for her original lovey for about a week, until she got over it. That was nearly a year ago now, and she still hasn't picked out a new lovey... She picks a stuffed animal to sleep with for a week or so at a time, then finds a new one.

Don't feel too bad... I know that *I* miss her lovey more than she does!

*Wow, I love Leigh's idea of making collars!

If you want the same lovey contact the store, check Amazon and Ebay - this is where I found a similar lovey for my daughter.

Next. Have Daddy get her a new lovey. Have daddy present it to her and have him explain that this new lovey was sent to your DD to make her feel less sad since the other lovey had to go away.
