Hi Moms,
I'm back again with another poop question. I posted a question last week about possible rotavirus or some sort of a stomach bug being responsible for loose stools. Well it's now day 14 and he had some normal stools for 2 days and now back to the loose ones. At this point, I'm wondering if it could be an allergy to milk? This all started around the time I started to introduce whole organic milk. I started slowly with one ounce and got to 4 when it all started. He was off regular milk for a couple days until his poop got better. I started the whole milk again this Saturday and so did the loose poops. Has anyone had this happen with their child? Could it be allergies or intolernace to milk?? I'm really worried at this point and am seeing the Dr but would love to have some feedback from everyone. Thanks!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hi Everyone
Well when I picked him up from daycare he wasn't feeling too well. We went to the Dr and from what the Dr concluded is that he might still have rotavirus. We're doing stool samples to eliminate any other possibile cause. I am not giving him milk right now but do sneak in some probiotics to help with his little digestive system. I can't believe he's had this virus for 14 days now...Anyway, thank you all for your feedback.

I think it's unlikely to be a milk allergy if your son is on formula. The formula is made of cow's milk as well (unless he is on a special formula) so it probably wouldn't be a sudden reaction. Some of the usual signs of milk allergy are skin rash, wheeziness, congestion, constipation, a red ring around the anus, and gas.

If your son was on breastmilk then it is a different story and could be related. Good luck.

My daughter went through something very similar, but she also got asthma, bronchitis, a red rash, diahhrea, etc. It's not an allergy if your child can tolerate butter, cheese, etc. If they can't then it could be an allergy. An allergist can't test for intolerance so what you can do is an elimination diet where you remove all "milk" and milk products for two weeks to see how your child feels. If they feel better you have your answer. You can also try Lactaid which is a lactose free milk. This will help keep your child's stool firmer and get them the necessary calcium without the consequences of the lactose (loose stool). Good luck!

We had a similar experience with our now 3 year old twins. Last winter, we went round and round with a stomach flu/rotavirus thing that seemed to just keep coming back, being passed around with our 3 kids. When it was finally over, one of the twins seemed to have developed an intolerance for milk products. We've had good luck with lactose free milk such as lactaid (stonyfield farms makes a lactose free lowfat version...I prefer a higher fat content, but want organic...it's a dilemma). Also, ask your pharmacist for "florastor," it's a probiotic that can help to restore the good bacteria in his gut that might be the culprit. It's a powder that dissolves in juice or water. The kid's version is flavored. Not cheap, but it's helped us through some nasty diapers too.

My son had the same problem when he was 9mo.That's when we first discovered he had food allergies. He started vomiting, and he had very loose stools for a couple of days. I had called my doctor and they told me that it could possibly be that he is allergic to milk because that was the only thing he was drinking. She had me stop giving him milk and just give him fruit juice. After a couple of days the vomiting stopped and so did the loose stools. I took him in for a allergy test and discovered he was allergic to that a lot of other things i unaware of. I have been giving a milk substitute and he is doing just fine now.

Try rice milk for a week and see what happens. My son was allergic to milk (and other things) but we figured it out through my breast milk at first. Vomiting, loose stool, rash, gas... they usually tell you to try to cut it out for a few weeks to see if it makes any difference before and around 1 anyway. : )
