I had posted a ? about adults having to have their tonsils out, today I saw the ENT and pretty much my tonsils are BIG not HUGE but BIG and damn did it hurt when he squeezed it. He said I have two options go on an antibiotic (I have no infection) so thats pointless or surgery. I am not a fan of pain but I know I will be able to handle it. DH has two weeks off starting next Monday He will have to be Mr. Mom. Any advice I can give him to prep for my recovery? The Dr said its week 2 that is really bad when the scab is trying to slough off is this accurate? Please feel free to give me more stories good or bad about recovery I'd rather be prepared than get caught with my pants down. TIA

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

thank you everyone for being so honest. I plan to ask for liquid meds I am not going to attempt to swollow pills. Once I find out when my surgery will be I plan to stock up on pudding, ice pops and another bag of ice. I think hubby is more freaked out than I am about this. I have already gone through 3 surgeries with him and he was a pain in the butt, I think he is afraid of what he has coming his way with me. lol. I guess I go big or go home.

I had mine out in December. It was horrible, but there were some things I did to make it better. Make SURE you have a humidifier in the room with you, and drink. I know the drinking part is hard, but staying hydrated is so so important. My husband kept the humidifier full, water at my side, and set the alarm to get up when my meds were due. Stay on top of the pain meds. They sent me home with tylenol with codeine, I ended up going to my doc and getting liquid oxycontin to take with the t3. Those 2 saved my life!! Of course me throat hurt like hell, it was about 2 weeks before I really ate, but the spot from having my adenoids out probably felt the weirdest! Good Luck. I would never ever ever in a million years want to go through with it again, but I sleep better and don't get as sick!

I just had mine out last Monday, I am 31. I don't even know where to begin. When I woke up from anesthesia I couldn't breath out of my nose. Everything was so swollen it was unreal. I did not sleep the first 3 nights, maybe an hour here or there. Sleep sitting up no matter how hard it is to keep swelling down. When you sleep you will breath in and out through your mouth which causes dry mouth and coughing be careful!!. Make sure you have plenty to drink near you and a lot of ice chips. By the third day I went back to the Dr and had him take a look because I was so swollen I was having difficulty breathing at night. My surgery was tough because my tonsils were so swollen for so long and so big they were imbedded in my throat which caused for more digging and cutting. The first 2 days I was in pain but not horrendous pain. I was able to eat mashed potatoes with gravy. By the 4th day I thought I was dying. You can feel the scabs on your throat so do not eat rice or little noodles because you will feel like you have something in your throat already you will think it is the rice or the noodles. The 4th, 5th, 6th day are the worst. I promise you. I also had a ice pack that I wore as a necklace because my neck was swollen as well. This past Monday was my 7th day and I went back for the check up. He said everything looked the way it was suppose to and I wont start feeling well until next week. I have not eaten since Wednesday of last week. Other then water and ice pops. They as well burn my throat but you have to get something in you. I had difficulty urinating and the dr said it was a side effect from the meds along with the rash I got on my face and stomach. I itched so bad. I started to feel OK today and I straightened up the house and what not for like 20 minutes and then I was down for the count. You just have to heal. I am so bored. As for preparing, I am a single mom so I pre-made my daughters food for her to heat up. She is 13. I made sure I had someone to come and stay with me over night for the first 3 nights. That is the most important because that it when the bleeding will occur. Thankfully I did not have any bleeding. It hurts to yawn more then it does to cough. Oh and ask for a prescription for nausea. You will feel like you are nauseous and want to throw up. Good luck. I promise it will hurt but it will get better. I have my emotional moments. Last night I was so hungry I tired to eat ice cream my daughter was sitting next to me on the couch and I just cried and she rubbed my back because the ice cream hurt my throat so much. She ended up getting my ice cream. She is a good kid. Never look in your throat you will freak yourself out and you will have a lot of gas. Do not drink anything acidic. Also the dr crushed up my meds in applesauce and it was gross. I put applesauce on a spoon put the whole pill on the spoon and swallowed. It was hard to swallow a pill with water. I think that is it. If you have any questions pm me. Good Luck I will be thinking about you.

with my son's surgery, we were told to expect more pain on Day 5 & 10. Pretty much dead-on with that expectation.....

I had my adenoids removed when I was a preteen... it was due to size, they were massive! I remember it not being very fun, and sore, but I don't remember it being excruciatingly painful or bothersome.
