Hi M.,

My girls are 24 & 16. When my oldest was high school, I became concerned about her friends and lack of activities, so we all joined a local church and we all became involved different church activities. It gave her a sense of community and I knew the activities and trips she took were wholesome and well chaperoned. She worked in the nursery on Sundays, helped on Wednesday nights with the younger kids & went to youth groups.

My oldest also joined the color guard (band) in high school and that kept her super busy after school. Again, those school activities were always well chaperoned and on the plus side for that, the kids had to maintain good grades in order to participate, so the kids who joined and stayed were a dedicated and good group.

My oldest was also working after school and summers by the time she was 15 and that helped to keep her busy and out of trouble.

My youngest became involved in the debate and drama class in high school, and again, its a very time consuming activity. The kids put in 12 hour days sometimes 5 days a week between school and drama. Their hard work has paid off and they have won many prestigious awards this year, which gives my daughters self confidence a huge boost.

Lack of supervision and organized activities gets a lot of teens into trouble. It is hard, but maybe she can volunteer with the local Girl Scout troop or at an animal shelter or doing something else shes interested in.

Good luck!

Take away her computer. Let her use it only for homework when you are home.

Enroll her in dance, art, music class. Sports....

Find out what she likes you said she's on the internet long hours, what is she doing playing games or talking to friends. If it's talking to friends call thier moms and see if they too are spending long hours on the net. Maybe together you can get them to take a dance class of some sort or even gymnastics Octavio's gym is pretty reasonable and fun I took my son there. How about turning off the computer and have a girls day out just you and her go have some ice cream and talk.

I have two boys (18&15) they are required to be involved in one activity of interest during the year. It doesn't matter what. A club at school, a sport or anything she is interested in. They must also find it, you don't do it for her. I ask general questions about it, they play football and wrestle. It is also important that if there are any functions in which you need to be active, that you attend. If she used to do something when she was younger then encourage her with that, or maby she is interested in something different. The important thing is to encourage her for herself.
