Looking for Vacuum Recommendations

I need to buy a new vacuum for my hardwood and tile floors. I'd prefer lightweight since I also need it for my hardwood stairs. What do you recommend? What should I stay away from? Thanks for the help!

What can I do next?

Hi D.!

We have almost all hardwood floors and had a canister vac that I liked for the convenience of using it on the stairs. It just wasn't that good. I liked having a smaller attachment for the floors instead of a beater brush - like the uprights and found that Dyson has a canister vac that has a beater brush attachment - for rugs and carpets. I love it because it's so easy to use on hardwood, the stairs, and I can switch attachments for the rugs. It's also very compact. We found in at Bed Bath and Beyond and used the 20% off coupon you get in the mail. If you had all carpet I would probably go with the upright. Good luck. I hope you find the right one!

after using every vacuum in the world, i finally payed up for the dyson. i got the cheapest one and i did try and hold out to see if prices came down after they were out for a while, but they really didn't change much. i love this vacuum.....the suction on this thing is almost miraculous....good luck!

I can tell you what NOT to buy: Dirt Devil Power Stick and Shark Retractor (?) I think that's what it's called. I have both, and neither of them do the job. Thanks for asking this question!

We bought a Dyson (the yellow one) a few years ago and absolutely LOVE it!! Have had no problems with it and it works GREAT!!! It is pricey, but soooooo worth it! I bought it at Kohls, waited for a sale and then used a coupon for an additional percentage off.

I recently bought the Swivel Sweeper too just for quick pick ups after meals, etc. VERY lightweight and works great!!!

Another thing we bought for our hardwood floors is the Scooba IRobot that washes and dries floors - they make the roomba vaccuums too. We have both but I particularly like the Scooba becasue I can run it to clean our hardwood floors once a week while I do something else. Does a great job, but takes a long time to clean the entire floor. Worth the money!!!

Good luck!

I have a Eureka and it works on the hardwood, tile, and carpet. There is a switch in the bottom for hard floor surfaces. I really like it and it was not very expensive around $150. We have had it for 3 years now and it still works great! I believe we bought it at Bed Bath and Beyond.

We've had a Kirby for about 8 years now and absolutely love it. It is worth the price that is for sure. You can haggle with the sales people quite a bit actually. You can also buy refurbished and these things are meant to last forever, so I am sure the refurbished are still great. It comes with tons of attachments that the salesman can show you how to use. I was just at the CL store the other day and the salesguy showed me how to use them all (I wasn't home when we bought it 8 years ago and never knew what some of them did). There is a special hardwood floor attachement. There is also a handy handle attachment where you can take apart the heavy stuff and you use it on the stairs. They also have an attachment that allows the vacuum to become an inflatable blower or allow you to uninflate things. It also has an attachment to be a carpet shampooer and a upholstry or car shampooer. All the attachments are super easy to use, even though it may sound complicated here. And, they all come with the vacuum. Kirby's last forever, and they are very powerful, so it's worth the money in my opinion. I have had other vacuums in the past, and I went through one every 5-6 years. With the Kirby, I expect it will last until I die and so far, I have never had a single issue with it. Good luck!
