Looking for Tips on a Trip to Cocoa Beach

My family is heading to Cocoa Beach, FL this summer for a weeks vacation and I'd love to hear what attractions are a "must see" and what is not worth going to. I have found lists of local attractions, but I hate to waste the money on some place that turns out to be a bust. We'll obviously be going to the beach and to Kennedy Space Center, but I know we won't be spending every day at the beach.

We are also on a VERY tight budget! So, any tips on budgeting the trip are also helpful. The place we are renting has a kitchen, so I plan on doing lots of meals there.

Also, we will be splitting the drive over 2 days and would like to stay overnight someplace cool about half-way. Any suggestions?

Thanks, as always!

What can I do next?

we just got back from there! love the beach and the pier and Ron Jon's - we haven't been there, but the zoo in Melbourne was highly recommended (I have preschoolers btw) - we didn't do it on this trip, but in prior trips we have done the kennedy space center - pay the extra money for the back stage tour - it is well worth it and you get to see sooo much more!

if you do go out to eat I recommend Coconuts for lunch or dinner and Simply Delicious for breakfast

we stopped in charleston on the way home for a few days (drove straight through the night on the way there) - kids loves it - not exactly on the way though, but it was fun and we had some time to enjoy it

I'm going to email this request to my friend who lives there to see what else she can add :)

We have a time share in Daytona beach and we go done at least once a year. We actually drove down twice this year. We stop in Florence SC (5-6 hour drive from Va Beach) at the Springhill suites - has nice rooms and an awesome free breakfast. In Cocoa Beach as others stated you must hit Ron Jons - it is the best and if you are looking for a nice beach go to Lori Wilson park - has restrooms and also has a playground! Those are my recommendations - good luck.

The beach is great! I was there a few years ago, and quite honestly we spent all of our time there. For any souveniers -especially if your kids are pre-teens or teens -go to Ron Jon's big 'ol tacky house of kitsch and souveniers! T-shirt paradise (and you'll see 10,000 Ron Jon's signs on the way there telling you how many more miles it is to Cocoa Beach). Anyway -that was fun. Definitely do the Kennedy Space Center, but other than that -just enjoy the beach -it's free! Rent bikes if you're not bringing your own, because there's enough wide, packed sand to ride on the beach, particularly at low tide.

Beach! and be sure to see the Pier, it's a historical landmark. Ron Jon Surf Shop like Julie B said. Kennedy Space Center, you mentioned. US Astronaut Hall of Fame ~next to the Kennedy Space Center. (I thought it was boring). There was some kind of Wild Life Refuge but I don't remember what it was called if you like plants, animals, birds, wildlife. Andretti Thrill Park (in Melbourne) kids like this. Jungle Adventures (in Christmas, FL) largest gator farm in Florida - was OK, we took a jungle cruise.
