Hello! Now that the weather is getting nice I feel like we're on a go more often than not. My daughter is 22 months old and I'm looking for good snack ideas that don't need to be refrigerated. Ideally I'm looking for protein ideas however she is NOT eating peanut butter yet. I'm open to any thoughts and/or suggestions. Thanks!

A few ideas:
- String cheese (single serve packages keep well in the backpack)
- BabyBel brand cheese (in single-serve round red wax covers, long shelf life)
- Sunflower seeds - my 20 month old loves them
- Granola bars
- Yogurt (can stay good in backpack for a few hours)
- Milk - in the summer months she'll need more fluids, and I struggle with getting my 20 m.o. to drink enough when we're out and about)

My kids love cheese and crackers. If you buy the 'Laughing Cow' brand cheese that comes in the round container, each small triangle shaped wedge does not require refrigeration...of course, this isn't something I'd leave in a hot car all day long or squish at the bottom of a diaper bag, but it's nice to bring with somewhere and not have to worry about dragging a cooler.

I know you're looking for protein ideas and your daughter is only 22 mo old. But in the interest for anyone else reading your Q&A, I'll add a few more non-protein items, good for any backpack:

* Big ol' carrots (and a peeler). NOT THE "baby carrots" which have no taste
* GORP (good ol' raisins and peanuts")
* Pita and hummus
* A clean baked potato (really- eat the whole thing, skin and all. It's a great "filler")
* Bottle for tap H20

familyfun.com will give you lots of wonderful ideas for fun snacks.

your own homemade trail mix is always a great and easy snack. trail mix can include anything craisins, raisins, nuts, seeds (sunflower seeds/pumpkin seeds), chocolate chips, goldfish, M&Ms, mini marshmallows, bunny grahams/whatever kind of grahams, etc.

I will be following your post for ideas as well! I do know that there are protein bars out there. "Zone" (available at Walmart, etc) makes a snack size in a flavor called "fudge graham" that my daughter likes (I like it too). They are a bit pricey and are chocolate coated so would need to be stored out of direct sun/heat, but may work in a diaper bag.

J. - I fill a bag with cheerios and pretzles and what ever else I have on hand. (mini marshmellows, goldfish, etc) My boys love them so I have a bag in the car, one in the diaper bag and sometimes in my purse. I am always looking for new ideas also. Good luck!

We like to buy dried fruit.....little boxes of raisins, dried blueberries are itty bitty and fit in a snack sized ziploc bag nicely. We also eat a lot of goldfish crackers - I keep a small plastic container of them in the diaper bag at all times! We're also fans of the Archer Farms (from Target) fruit strips - I can tear them right down the middle into smaller strips that are easier for my 18 month old to eat. I also like to buy cheese sticks or blocks of cheese and slice them into sticks - but then that requires I bring a small insulated bag w/an ice pack to keep them cool.
