I am due in 3.5 wks and i was wondering if anyone knew the exact tx law on the positioning of car seats in the vehicle. Does it have to be in the middle or can it be on the driver or passenger side? I have heard so many conflicting opinions. Help!

What can I do next?

Hi J.,

I'm a Child Passenger Instructor...I educate parents in the correct use of safey seats. The center position is the safest position in the vehicle because it provides additional space between your baby and the doors. I recommend contacting Cook Children's (located at the Urgent Care Center on Precint Line and Mid-cities Blvd.) and setting up an appt. to learn how to install and use your infant carrier properly. It is a free service and the appt. last about 30 minutes. Call ###-###-####.

it just has to be in the back seat.... safest place is in the middle but there's no rule as to WHERE in the back seat... just rear facing in the back seat...

This was on MSNBC tonight and so I thought I would forward the article. If you don’t have children in infant seats maybe you know someone who does who would appreciate the article.

Only the Baby Trend Flex-Loc and the Graco SnugRide with EPS passed all tests. The problems with LATCH were also interesting.

I believe Harris Hospital will help you. They can make sure the seat is fit properly. I called to see if I could get donated seats for my day care and they were ready to come to my home to fit the seats. The do not donate though.

A state trooper installed ours and placed the seat accordingly. He said that it depends on the vehicle type.
If you would like his information email me. He was very helpful, he came out to our house and spent an hour educating us!
Congratulations on your upcoming arrival.

No specific law on the positioning in the car.
I would put the baby in the middle b/c it is much safer especially if you were hit by another vehicle on the side the baby would be. I put my baby in the middle and my older child on the driver side.
Make sure you have the base of your car seat in very well w/ a tether strap. I would go by a fire department to make sure it is in correctly.
Good luck and congrats on your 1st born baby :)

J.,

No, the seat does not have to be in the middle. It only has to be in the back seat and must be rear facing until your baby is 1 year old. Hope this helps!
