Looking for Recent Birth Experiences at Chandler Regional Hospital...

I am 35 weeks pregnant and had my first baby at Mercy Gilbert (which I absolutely loved). My current OB/GYN's office is right next to Chandler Regional, and we have been entertaining the idea of just going there to have baby #2 - specifically because we are thinking about having an unscheduled repeat c-section. (Not setting a date, but waiting until I go into labor.)

Our Dr. indicated that would probably be a bit easier if we did it at Chandler, because he would be close by and more likely to be available than if we went to Mercy (he would most likely make it no matter what; but if he is stuck with a VBAC or an emergency at Chandler, he wouldn't be able to go to Mercy.)

So I am curious to hear about recent experiences at Chandler Regional and what their facilities are like -- specifically the rooms you stay in after the baby is born. (I've been to the L & D Triage 2 times already to be checked out.) The nurses in Triage seemed pretty nice, but I think I like the triage area at Mercy better...didn't seem as busy either.

Also if anyone has been to both hospitals (Chandler and Mercy Gilbert) I would love to hear your comparison between the two. I'm asking because I can't get in for a tour until August 3rd...and I have a feeling this baby might be early again (my daughter was born at 37 weeks) and if that's the case, I won't make it to the tour date!

What can I do next?

H.,
I had a great experience at CRH! In February 2006 I had an emergency C-Section and it went so smoothly, I was admitted and finished in 30 minutes! Every thing went well. It was my second birth at CRH. My first was normal, but just as smooth. The attention I received was phenomenal.
My doctor was Goodman & Partridge.
Good Luck!

I delivered my first son at Chandler Regional (2005) and my second and third at Mercy Gilbert (2006 and 2007). The nurses at both hostpital were really nice. I had the same concerns as you that my second would come really fast and the doctor wouldn't be able to get there (mine also delivered at both but most people chose Chandler). It has been just fine with all 3 babies. Doctors arrived no problem. Th facilities are MUCH nicer at Mercy Gilbert (unless Chandler has made rooms much bigger, but it doesn't sound like they have). The rooms at Mercy are also made for one patient, but they are also designed for an in-room baby, a dad who stays there, a TV, a phone, a nice big bathroom, a recliner, etc. When the older hospitals were designed, dads didn't stay with mom and baby didn't stay with mom. Nowadays, baby stays with you in a rolling bassinet, which really makes TWO patients in the room. I highly recommend Mercy for the room size and dad's convenience. My husband preferred Mercy quite a bit. And the people are nice, we've always been able to get right in at Mercy (I waited for a while at Chandler triage too).

I understand a repeat C-section is much easier if you haven't gone into labor, so I'm wondering why you're choosing not to schedule it?

I had a baby there about 6 1/2 years ago. It was fine... then I had my second there and they were doing all kinds of remodelling and I was stuck in this tiny room listening to drills and hammers all day. That was over 4 years ago though. The care that I recieved there was fine. I would say to tour it and make sure the rooms are finished before make your decision. Good luck with your new baby!!!

I gave birth to my son at Chandler in March 2008. Overall, I thought the people there were great. I was over a week late and went in to be induced, and due to the fact that there seemed to be a lot of people having babies around that time I was stuck in triage for quite a while before I got my own room. But, if you come in ready to give birth then I can understand that you get priority for a room before me. The labor and delivery rooms are huge, very nice and have a place for the husbands to sleep. The recovery rooms however are very small. I lucked out and got a room meant for someone in a wheelchair so it was a bit bigger, but I saw the other rooms and they are tiny! They also didn't have anywhere for my husband to sleep, just a big recliner which isn't too comfortable. They apparently don't have any cots or anything. I would be open to trying another hospital with my next pregnancy but Chandler is the closest hospital to us and to my family so out of convenience I will probably end up going there again. That is to say, the small rooms aren't enough to keep me away. The overall experience was made much better by the nursing staff.

I love the ____@____.com niece was born via c-section & the nurses were wonderful w/her & my niece's mom. All of them were very friendly, helpful & caring to your needs. I was there every day while they were in the hospital so I got a very good feeling & it made me more excited. I was pregnant during the time my niece was born & I was nervous to delivery @ a hospital I didn't know. But after my niece was born I felt very comfortable to have my baby there. I delivered my baby vaginal & again the nurses were wonderful. They are all very patient with you.

And yes the recovery room is small but that is because it's you by yourself. It only has one bed in there. It's made to have one patient in there not two. But it isn't bad. You have your own privacy.

Good luck with your choice!

I had my daughter at crh one year ago and LOVED my experience. Yes the recovery room was small but that was god because a shorter walk to my bathroom. :).

My docs are Goodman and partridge and I will go to CRH again if I have another baby. By the way I
Understand the nurses split their time between the two hospitals.

My daughter was born at Chandler Regional March 2008. All the nurses were exceptionally nice. I was a little aggravated when I was in labor but I can't totally blame them but because her heart rate would not stay on the monitor I was only allowed on my side and I was extremely uncomfortable! The recovery rooms are tiny and thats my biggest complaint at some point you get claustrophobic and if yo0u have lost of visitors it gets so cramped! Now I have two other kids and my SO who were there often so it was quite crowded! I had to choose chandler over Mercy because I have step B and jaundice babies and their NICCU is better so that's where my doctor said I needed to have her:) Plus my doc office and pediatrician are across from the hospital so its makes it easier!~

I had two babies at CRH and one at Mercy Gilbert. I preferred my experience at MG. I felt like I was at Club Med (ok, I've never been to club med) at MG. At CRH I has some of the same situations others have told about (bulk recovery rooms, a few rude nurses, etc) but my biggest issue was not enough food. I constantly felt like I was starving at CRH. MG I got plenty of food and the atmosphere is more relaxed, more modern, etc.

I am planning to have my next babies there (Twins at 31 weeks!), but I will say that if you are in labor and not yet 34 weeks, go to CRH, they are set up for under 34 weeks, MG is not.

I had our second child at Chandler Hospital. It was an unscheduled c-section on Thanksgiving weekend!

The triage area, you're right, isn't all that great. I wasn't in there very long - I got there about noon, they checked me, called my doctor and told me I'd be kept in the hospital until my 5:00 surgery time. I was taken to sort of a "waiting room" with lots of beds, where I was attended to by very sweet nurses. It was a long afternoon, and completely unplanned, so they did their best to keep my husband and I upbeat and entertained.

When I was taken into surgery for my c-section, the nurse that held me still while they gave me the spinal tap was SO SWEET. She was trying to talk to me about the football game that was on, rubbing my arms, petting my head. She was just lovely. And once we got in there, and my hubby came in, it was like "old home week" because a couple of the attendants were from my husband's home town. Their conversation took my mind off of what was going on "down below".

When they were done, I was wheeled into that same "waiting area" where I was able to see my family, my 3 year old son came in to see me, and I was able to see my husband showing off our new daughter to everybody through the window. After cleaning me up, I was taken to a room. Now - the rooms are TINY! I mean really TINY! If you have a lot of family, they won't be able to visit all at once. The rooms are so small. But hey, you're only there a couple of days, so it's not that big a deal.

The staff - nurses, attendants, everybody - were just wonderful! They really made my experience the best. I can't think of anything they didn't do, or wouldn't do for me, my husband or anybody. I really had a great experience at Chandler Hospital. I thought after my first child was born in Prescott, at Yavapai Regional, I couldn't have a better experience, but this one really was great.

Hello,

My daughter just had her baby at Chandler Regional a few months ago and said that she had a wonderful experience and the staff was great! She also had to have a C- Section . She said her nurses were really good and took very good care of her and the baby. If you have the C-section the room is small but it is meant for you and the baby. They had a recliner for my son in law to sleep in when he was there and said that it wasn't that bad. They have a few chairs in your room for visiters too. Also had a TV which is a plus my daughter told me :) She said that she would want to have all of her children there and really liked the hospital a lot.

It was also really good experience becasue they have a big area in front of the nursery and you can film and take pictures when they are giving the baby their first bath, taking their foot print and everything.

I have also had many surgeries their too and I think it is a really good place to go.

Good Luck in your choice and having the baby.

I personally do not have a comparison for you. My doctor however delivers at both. I want Mercy just cause its closer to my house. I did ask her which she would prefer. Her office is right next to Mercy. She told me it really didnt matter...she delivered both her own kids at CHandler. They are basically owned by the same people. My paper work for Mercy says Chandler all over it. I wanted to have my tubes tide when I deliver and Mercy wont do that...but I am sticking with Mercy just cause its so close. hehe I am not sure this has helped..but bottom line my doc says they are a lot the same!! Good luck..im just 4 weeks behind you...hehe but several more years older!!!

I had my first child via c-section @ chandler and I hated the fact that the postpartum rooms were so small....not a good experience overall! I had my second @ mercy in october and I felt like i was in a resort compared to Chandler.....I will never go back to chandler personally.

Good Luck!

If possible I would go to Mercy gilbert. I had my daughter at Chandler and was put into the overflow rooms on the second floor and the room was so small that if someone had the recliner leaned back you could not open the door. So the nurses were coming in and out all night and my mom was trying to sleep in the chair but had to sit up to let them in. Also, the overflow rooms were across from the ICU and those nurses would not help you at all. The labor and delivery rooms were fine and the nurses downstairs were great. I had my son at gilbert and it was overall a much better experience.
