Looking for Place to Take Teen to Learn How to Apply Make Up

I am wanting to give my 13 year old daughter a gift certificate for Christmas to take her to a place to learn the correct way of applying make up. I remember my mom taking me to Merle Norman at about the same age and I love that I learned the best way to apply make up right away. I'd like to give my own daughter the same experience.

I want it to be some place that is age-appropriate in terms of both products and application, but some place she will feel special about going to. Ideally, I'd like for there to be no cost for the lesson although we will buy some products for her.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! If you have any insights to add about a place, positive or negative, I would appreciate your feedback.

Thank you!

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the great ideas! I had no idea that Merle Norman was even still around, so I may look into that. Mary Kay is not really an option for her--the skin care products have aggravated her acne. My sister is a former consultant and I have several consultants that I know, but I really wanted the "spa type" of treatment to make it feel more special.

I agree--she doesn't really need (or want) much make-up. I want a lesson that will be age appropriate and mostly about skin care. As of now, I think we will try the Mac store or Merle Norman.

You ladies are great! I would appreciate any other comments-especially from anyone that has personal experience with either of the above two places.

THANKS!! Happy Holidays!

At 13 she doesn't need much make-up. With those wonderful hormones, etc she does need to learn to take care of her skin. I say go for a Mary Kay rep. I like a Mary Kay party with her friends.

Take care

Try the MAC stores. They are very trendy and cool, so she should feel pretty comfortable. They have great products, I think.

I second the vote for a Mary Kay representative! You could have a few of your daughter's friends over and make it a party. I did this for my daughter. She had a blast. The representative for very fun, patient, and not at all pushy. She, also, showed the girls some skincare products that are good for teens.
Have fun!

Hi, K.. What a great time in your daughter's and your lives. I remember that time well. I took both my daughters to the Cliniique counter at Macy's-then Marshall Field's. They taught her age appropriate makeup, really geared it to a light touch, and did not try to see me a ton of product. Just the essentials-by my request. When the session was done she looked natural and not made up and it was a very positive experience. I would suggest you call ahead for an appointment. Have fun!

It's a little out of your way, but for a really personal touch you might try Odalisque in Geneva. The owner, Bridget, is wonderful (will make you feel welcome and not overwhelmed) and she will give you and your daughter a really special experience. I think she does makeovers for free with a $50 purchase. The store is on 3rd street, so it could be a fun mother daughter day out. Good restaurants and shopping.

Merle Norman is still a great option! There is a shop in downtown Elmhurst. The owner and her daughter are wonderful. We took my niece there and Jenny did a beautiful job (Jenny is in her 20s and a great role model).

Find a Mary Kay representative in your area. You could set up an appt. to have them come to your home - or you go to theirs. My rep. is so sweet and patient. I think it is a great idea.

Great idea K.! I do this as well and have 2 teen girls. I do parties and actually teach them about hygeniene, "good versus bad (cheap)" makeup, what is out there and how the skin care products that you use really make a difference in your health - ie. contributing to acne, etc. Here's an interactive website for teens that I think you and she might like. Go to: www.fyiarbonne.com Doesn't use lots of makeup that many teens are using these days and kindof look like Halloween! Scary.....

Check it out and let me know what you think! All girls get their own books and can go onto this website. Tons of fun but I like is that they are educated on what is good for them. Let me know if I can be of further assistance! It's best to teach them right away about cleansers, acne, makeup, etc. Enjoy!!
