Looking for Moms with Diastasis Recti

So thanks to this web site and the responses I had recieved asking about belly bands of all things, I've been now confirmed by my internist to have diastasis recti (with possibly an umbilical hernia resulting from this - have appt with surgeon next week to evaluate further). Kudos to those moms that "diagnosed" this for me - never heard of it before!! Looking for other moms with this or who have had this - did you do anything short of getting a tummy tuck to help this? I've heard that doing crunches worsens the condition. Did you try yoga or pilates? Any instuctional dvds? Physical therapy?

I would highly recommend you take a look at this article outlining several exercises for your condition: http://babyfit.sparkpeople.com/articles.asp?id=805. I also had significant diastasis recti after giving birth to my 3rd, a plump 9# 5 oz boy. These exercise really work and along with weight loss and time (baby is now 19 mos), I do not need (or want) a tummy tuck. I have no extra hanging skin and my abs are tight again--even at a ripe old age of 37(: There's a surgery for everything, but there's a lot exercise and diet can do without all the risk. Best wishes! Yep, I had it! Check out this girls workout DVD's and website:

She has a whole series on doing exercises that help the diastis recti issue. Plus, she informs you that yoga is the worst thing you could do, but pilates has a lot of moves that are helpful (but not all). Also, go look up exercises on youtube to correct it, that helped me a ton.

I was able to fully correct mine, I didn't have the hernia issue so no surgery was needed. However, it wasn't easy to get it back to normal, it took some work on my part but it finally closed to only 1 finger width wide.

Did your internist tell you about anything you could do that was non-surgical? I have the same thing also but no hernia so I am currently in a wait and see according to my OB.

I'm 90 % sure I have this. I will have it confirmed / not when I go in for a check up in a month. I am now taking pilates . My schedule only allows me to take it once a week, only taken about 12 classes. I think I'm starting to notice a difference .

Right, you don't want to do crunches of any type.

If you strengthen your transverse, it can help. Pilates, planks, that kind of work can help. Anything where you are pulling your belly button towards your spine.
"Lose Your Mummy Tummy", by Julie Tupler is a book and video with exercises to specifically address this.
However, if your split is more than 2 finger widths, the exercise isn't going to help much, honestly.

I have a 2 finger split, and an going for a full TT on 11/1. My SIL had a 5 finger split (yes, that's right), and had a full TT as well - with hernia repair (2x). The TT was the only thing that could possibly help her. And for me, after a year, I'm in the same boat.
