Looking for Mommy Groups for Moms with Autistic Children in the San Jose Area.

My son has mild autism and has been doing really well in the classes he is taking through the school district. He has been in the class for about 3 months. I have already seen a big improvement in his speech. However, his behavior is worst than ever. He is getting aggressive with the other kids and even with us. We talk to him, let him know that hitting is not ok and give him a time out. It’s not just hitting, he throws items and sometimes hurts himself but banging his head on the wall or running to the door. When ever I discipline him, he laughs that whole time (which is very frustrating!!). I would like to find a support group and hear how other moms handle the behavior issues.

What can I do next?

I have gone through this same thing with 4 year old Nicholas. I have found that while consistancy with time outs are very needed,Changing your tone with your autistic child will inable you to rgain the control when you are disiplining your child.Have a soft mommy voice when its appropriate, but its so important to have your "Teacher tone" when you discpline. Not yelling or even raising your voice is needed. Stern and sure voice. youll be amazed the difference. And Consistancy is key! e mail me to chat sometime if yould ____@____.com San Jose Ca Rose Garden area.

I would also recommend a great organization in Palo Alto called The Children's Health Council. The don't necessarily have mommy groups, but they have classes specifically for families dealing with autism (social skills, etc.) You could check out their website and see if they have anything that could be helpful. They also provide financial assistance if necessary. I also saw that there is an autism study going on. Good luck.
